Optomec Appoints Former Semiconductor Executive as COO

Optomec, a supplier of production grade additive manufacturing (AM) systems for 3-D printed metals and 3-D printed electronics, has announced that Doug Welter, former Vice President and General Manager at Phillips Semiconductor (Now NXP N.V.), has assumed responsibilities in the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer at Optomec.

Welter brings over 30 years of experience managing high technology manufacturing operations and business P&L's around the world. He spent more than 25 years in the semiconductor industry with companies including Philips and Motorola. At Phillips' Standard IC Division Welter served as Vice President and General Manager and had P&L responsibility for operations in California, Arizona, Netherlands, Germany, Thailand and Taiwan. "By refocusing on customer support, manufacturing excellence and cost, Welter helped the IC Division return to strong profitability and improved market share," said a spokesperson.

At Motorola, Welter was the General Manger of the Automatic Test Equipment Group with P&L responsibility for its internal and external semiconductor test equipment business. Prior to that, Welter was the Director of Operations and General Manager of Motorola's advanced wafer manufacturing operation in South Queensferry, Scotland. This operation became Motorola's European BiCMOS center of excellence. More recently, Welter has held executive positions with several earlier-stage renewable energy and solid-state lighting companies. He holds a BSEE from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and did graduate work at Arizona State University.

"With AM as the new frontier in manufacturing, Optomec's advanced technology and market acceptance really has us positioned for success," said Doug Welter.

"Doug's extensive operations experience in capital-intensive, high value-chain industries will be an invaluable asset to Optomec as we grow our business," said Dave Ramahi, Optomec President and CEO.
