Creating a safe working environment with limited liability is a goal for any manufacturing manager. "Regardless of the materials involved, reducing particles, material waste and waste storage space helps create a safer environment - all of which can be accomplished with a briquetting system," said a RUF spokesperson. "Briquetting industrial waste, including saw dust, aluminum, cardboard, magnesium, grinding sludge and many other materials, can also generate a new revenue stream for the business."
MetalMart International, Inc., a family-owned distributor and intermediate manufacturer of hard to find materials, has experienced first-hand what briquetting can mean for business, employees and the bottom line.
"We work with magnesium, which is highly flammable and can lead to significant facility fires, so managing this material is critical," said MetalMart Corporate Quality Assurance Manager Patrick Corless. "Before RUF, we would use bags to store magnesium chips. While being filled, chips would sometimes drift out of these bags and disperse throughout the area."
In late 2014, MetalMart began briquetting its magnesium chips with a briquetting system from RUF. Not only has it made the facility safer and cleaner, but it has also reduced disposal costs and created a new revenue stream.
Briquetting the chips has also created a healthier environment for MetalMart employees. "Keeping our employees safe and healthy is one of the most important things we can do," said MetalMart CEO Andrew Lippman. "Briquetting reduces the chips and particles in the air, making it less likely that our people will inhale or ingest the magnesium dust."
Since incorporating the RUF briquetter, MetalMart has briquetted 30,000 lbs. of magnesium waste. The briquettes are easier to store and also reduce the cost and frequency of transporting the waste material.
"Briquetting our magnesium chips has significantly reduced our transportation costs while increasing income from recycling the magnesium briquettes," said Corless. "We should realize a cost savings of around $20,000 annually on the magnesium material disposal alone."
RUF Briquetting Systems can accommodate a wide range of organic and inorganic residual materials. "Most customers realize an 18-month or less return on investment," said a RUF spokesperson.
