Ganesh Machinery, Inc. has donated a GT-1640 lathe to Simi Valley Adult School & Career Institute for its machinist training program. The school was in need of current and relevant equipment, representative of what students could expect to find in the industry. "Machines in a classroom setting are used by students with limited knowledge and experience," said Simi Valley Lead Instructor Oygar Lindskog. "As a result, the machines must also be able to stand up to rough usage."
The Ganesh GT-1640 was selected to meet the needs of the class. "We already have two of these lathes, and we are very happy with them," said Lindskog. "We have found the lathe to be robust."
In the class, students learn how to perform turning and facing operations, single point threading, knurling, RPM and feed setting, as well as how to indicate in a part in the 4-jaw chuck. Materials typically used in the class include 1018, 12L14, aluminum and brass. "The GT-1640 is ideal for this type of work because it is a powerful and precise lathe. It is also the type of machine students can expect to see when they enter the workforce," said Lindskog.
Students make several class projects on the GT-1640 lathe:
- A screwdriver project exposes the student to turning, drilling, reaming, knurling. It also teaches them how to use a form cutter to obtain a radius.
- On the screw for a V-block assembly, students have to single point the thread in the lathe.
- An indicator holder presents them with the challenge of machining to tighter tolerances and different materials.
- A tapping center project is an entire assembly with a spring loaded tip made entirely on the lathe.
- With the hammer project, students must single point several threads, both external and internal. Students must turn steel, brass and nylon and perform grooving, undercut operations and knurling.
The Ganesh GT-1640 has hardened and ground Turcite coated bed ways and hardened and ground gears. Standard features include a 12-speed geared head spindle, safety foot brake, safety chuck guard, coolant pump, chucks, steady rest and follow rest.
"The Ganesh lathes are performing above our expectations, and have become a favorite of our students," said Lindskog.
In addition to manual lathes, students are instructed on mills, CNC lathes, CNC mills and CAD/CAM software.
Simi Valley Adult School & Career Institute was founded in 1936. Its mission is to educate and empower students to meet their goals through participation in accredited, technologically advanced, vocational, academic and personal enrichment programs that prepare them for leading successful lives in the global community.
