Makino to Demonstrate Enhanced Machine Tools

Makino will feature its a51nx and a61nx horizontal machining centers (HMCs), a500Z 5-axis HMC, D200Z 5-axis vertical machining center (VMC), DA300 5-Axis VMC, EDBV3 EDM drilling machine, UP6 HEAT wire EDM and V90S 5-axis VMC.

Enhanced a51nx and a61nx HMC

Offering the same rigid casting and axis designs of the original platforms, the current generation a51nx and a61nx feature an expanded list of technology advancements, including increased spindle torque, innovative tool monitoring, advanced motion controls and the Makino Professional 6 control.

Several enhancements have been made to reduce non-cut time on the updated a51nx and a61nx machines. A vision-type broken-tool sensor (Vision B.T.S.) comes standard, supporting unattended operation by quickly validating the condition of cutting tools after each tool change. By creating a silhouette of the cutting tools, Vision B.T.S. is also able to detect the length, size and approximate weight of the tool. This information can then be applied to automatically set the tool change speed to the appropriate setting (fast, medium or slow).

Inertia active control (IAC) technology has also been expanded for greater efficiency on the updated a51nx and a61nx machines. In addition to optimizing positioning motion of the rotational B-axis, IAC technology is now able to improve acceleration and deceleration rates along the Z-axis-the most frequently moved axis during cutting processes.

a500Z 5-Axis HMC

Makino's newest addition to its family of HMCs is the 5-axis a500Z. The kinematic arrangement of the a500Z minimizes the force path lengths through both the spindle and the workpiece, efficiently transferring both cutting loads and reactive forces into the machine's three point leveled bed.

All axes on the a500Z have closed loop active temperature control standard. With rapid rates for all linear axes of 2,362 IPM (60 m/min), and a B-axis rotation rapid rate of 45,000 degrees per minute, this agile platform allows for efficient machine movements.

The a500Z's standard 14,000 RPM spindle offers output capabilities of 49.6 HP (37 kW) peak power, and 223 ft-lbs. (303 N-m) peak torque. Tool changer magazine sizes range from the standard 60-tool capacity ring to a 313-matrix magazine.

D200Z 5-Axis VMC

The Makino D200Z 5-axis VMC combines the quickness of machine movements and accuracies with the latest software developments for high-precision, high-speed motion control. From roughing to high-speed finishing of multifaceted, contoured 3-D geometries, the D200Z boosts productivity for complex dies and molds typically found in the automotive, injection molding, packaging, medical and optical markets.

The D200Z is a compact unit (1,500 mm wide by 2,220 mm deep). All machine elements and peripheral equipment are strategically located within the main body of the machine. Both the standard 20-tool capacity automatic tool changer (ATC) and the optional 40-tool ATC fit within the same machine floor space. The machine tool magazine capacity can be optionally expanded to 100 and 300 tools.

DA300 Full 5-Axis VMC

Makino's latest full 5-axis machine solution is the DA300 VMC, designed for complex part applications.

"The DA300 integrates numerous features that increase productivity and efficiency by providing reductions in non-cut time," said Bill Howard, VMC Product Manager at Makino. "The machine provides a 50% reduction in spindle acceleration time, 15% reduction in positioning time, 40% reduction in tool change chip-to-chip time and includes a standard Vision B.T.S. that optically checks tools outside the work zone to ensure tool consistency and part quality while simultaneously reducing non-cut time during tool changes by 80%."

The DA300 comes standardly equipped with a 20,000 RPM HSK-A63 spindle for productive machining of various workpiece materials, including aluminum, die-cast, steel and titanium. The machine's standard configuration includes a 60-position ring-type tool magazine.

New EDBV3 EDM Drill

Makino will unveil a new version of the EDBV3, an EDM drilling machine designed for producing cooling film holes in blade and vane turbine engine component details. The EDBV3 utilizes a fully submerged operation to enhance machining speed and accuracy. The submerged operations are a critical element for stable breaking-through operations, especially when machining into a hollow internal cavity, and the machine is capable of detecting break-through within 1 second. The EDBV3 will use Makino's new fully digital ES200A generator that provides faster machining speeds with an increase in power of up to 80 amps and uses the Hyper-i control that delivers a common interface for all Makino EDMs.

The rapid feedrate of the machine's XYZ travels of 370 x 270 x 750 mm (14.65" x 10.63" x 29.53") has been doubled from 5 m/min. to 10 m/min., which will reduce the overall tact time for positioning. The standard integrated 2-axis rotary table has also been reconfigured so that the workpiece is closer to the center of rotation (reduces positioning distance), and the indexing speed has been improved from 3 RPM to 10 RPM.

The new EDBV3 provides a larger Z-axis stroke that supports electrode tube lengths up to 750 mm (29.5") and features a fully enclosed work zone with interlocks for increased safety. The automatic tool change times have been reduced. The ATC unit has been raised so that the work tank does not need to drain during electrode exchanges.

New UP6 HEAT Wire EDM

The new UP6 HEAT wire EDM is designed for ultra precision machining. It is capable of achieving workpiece positional accuracies of 1 micron (0.00004") while providing XYZ travels of 650 x 470 x 320 mm (25.59" x 18.50" x 12.68"). The UP6 HEAT machine is designed for high precision stamping and fine blanking applications and is suited for electric motor stator die tooling. The machine features a stationary work table design that helps improve positional accuracy, since the machine is moving the same mass regardless of workpiece weight. The machine uses a programmable rise and fall 3-sided work tank that provides ergonomic access to the work zone, and this configuration also simplifies requirements for automation.

New V90S 5-Axis VMC

The V90S next-generation VMC for true 5-axis continuous processing evolved from the 3-axis Vi series. It has an updated spindle and tilting/rotating axis unit that supports tighter tolerances and decreased machining and polishing times. The V90S combines quick machine movements and accuracies with the latest software for high-speed motion control. Designed for high-speed finishing of multifaceted 3-D contours, the V90S cuts cycle times and reduces handwork in complex specialty dies and molds.

To maximize work zone volume and load capacity, the V90S can accommodate workpiece sizes up to 2,200 x 1,500 x 700 mm and weighing 5,000 kg, such as automobile door inner panels and front grilles. The XYZ axes (2,000 x 1,300 x 800 mm) provide swift movements with rapid traverse rates of 58,000 mm/min and cutting feedrates of 40,000 mm/min. The V90S's A-axis tilts at ±30°, wide enough to machine holes for an angular pin, while the C-axis rotates at ±60°, insuring that the tool tip can be positioned to provide optimum contact with the workpiece.
