CNC Wheel Turning Center for Mirror Finishes

FEMCO will display the WHL-55Sp CNC Wheel Turning Center in an automated cell highlighting a FANUC robot. The FEMCO WHL-55Sp is a 45º slant bed lathe designed for machining mirror finishes.

The WHL-55Sp features a granite headstock, which provides rigidity and precision for mirror finishes. The granite headstock encases the high torque/high speed FANUC direct drive spindle motor, which provides 60 HP and 2,500 RPM of wheel machining capability. A large 28.62" swing over bed allows for machining wheels up to 22" in diameter with 12" widths. The extra wide 12-station bi-directional turret rapid traverses over solid wrap around box ways at a fast 787 IPM for high production capability.

The WHL-55Sp bed has a 45º slant for minimum tool tip overhang and maximum rigidity. The bed is a solid one-piece casting. Both the saddle and tailstock ways are in the same plain, thus eliminating thermal distortion. Heavy ribbing in strategic locations determined by computer finite analysis assures consistent accuracies and finishes.

The WHL-55Sp has a wide wrap around box way design, which provides long term accuracy and rigidity in the high production environments typical of the wheel manufacturing industry. The box ways are widely spaced for greater rigidity and stability, and are induction hardened and are ground true to the axis planes. The mating surfaces are lined with Turcite, providing enhanced wear and slip stick characteristics due to its low coefficient of friction. Turcite reacts with the structure, giving good vibration damping and high static and dynamic stiffness.

The WHL-55Sp granite headstock encases the high torque FANUC 50/60 HP direct drive spindle motor that provides power for heavy stock removal and minimizes the number of roughing cuts needed. The A.C. digital spindle drive system gives fast spindle acceleration and low-end horsepower and torque. The FANUC direct drive spindle is designed for low maintenance and eliminates spindle vibration to create mirror surface finishes.

FEMCO rates the WHL-55Sp turret's clamping force at 1,899 radial foot pounds from the turret center line to the tool tip. The turret's large curvic coupling provide rigidity for long tool life and enhanced surface finishes. Turret indexing is nonstop bi-directional, with a .9 second index time. Turret repeatability is .001°. The extra wide 12-station turret gives enhanced long boring bar support.

Both the X and Z axes of the WHL-55Sp are driven by double nut C1 class high precision ground ball screws. Both the ball screws are supported on both ends by angular contact thrust bearings. This double support design assures positioning accuracy and repeatability and minimizes thermal growth.

FEMCO also offers the larger WHL-68Sp with the capacity to machine mirror finishes on wheels up to 24" in diameter.
