Multitasking and Hybrid Additive Manufacturing Machines

Okuma MULTUS U5000 multitasking machine

Okuma MU-8000V LASER EX additive manufacturing hybrid

Okuma America Corporation will feature the new MULTUS U5000 CNC lathe, MU-S600V 5-axis vertical machining center (VMC), MU-8000V LASER EX super multitasking machine, LU7000EX CNC lathe and GENOS M460V-5AX VMC.

MULTUS U5000 Multitasking CNC Lathe

The MULTUS U5000 is a powerful 2-saddle CNC lathe with a range of specifications designed to handle large parts for the energy and aerospace industries. At IMTS 2018, this machine will be equipped with a W-axis and big-bore spindle and will be cutting a wind turbine crankshaft.

The MULTUS U5000 provides a sturdy platform for machining large, process intensive parts, providing a complete multitasking solution. Features include:

  • A rigid traveling column allows for powerful cutting along the entire Y-axis
  • Larger bed lengths, sub-spindle and lower turret configurations are available
  • Enhanced milling or turning performance for highly-efficient cutting of difficult-to-machine materials and a variety of CNC machining applications
  • Thermo-friendly concept provides long-term, stable machining accuracy
  • The OSP-P300SA control reduces keyboard operations by 50% and maximizes uptime with its Collision Avoidance System
  • Machining Navi (optional) maximizes tool performance by choosing the optimal speed(s) at which the machine can avoid chatter
  • Operator-friendly design.

MU-S600V 5-Axis VMC

At IMTS, the MU-S600V 5-axis VMC machine will be cutting a manifold block for the automotive industry. The MU-S600V is a flexible, 55" wide, 5-axis space-saving VMC. It is capable of achieving high production automation by connecting multiple machines and using built-in robotics to transfer parts from one machine to another. This slender machine has a wide machining area in a compact footprint, which maximizes both space utilization and productivity.

All six sides of the workpiece can be machined in a single set-up on two machines using Okuma's work handoff system. The MU-S600V has a standard 16 drum ATC with an optional 30-chain for increased efficiency. Okuma Intelligent Technologies ensure precise machining, with standard Thermo-Friendly Concept and Thermal Active Stabilizer providing enhanced thermal stability.

MU-8000V LASER EX

The MU-8000V LASER EX super multitasking machine combines 5-axis machining with a Trumpf laser to provide the latest laser additive technology with subtractive manufacturing capabilities. This process-intensive machine enables complete part production on one machine. At IMTS this machine will be shown manufacturing an engine case.

The MU-8000V LASER EX implements laser metal deposition (LMD) technology with the ability to cut unique parts of many different sizes and shapes. LMD supplies powder from nozzles and performs laser melting and bonding to parent material. This allows for various types of materials to be combined and layered in addition to the possibility of 3-D fabrication and cladding.

Parts can also be repaired and inspected throughout production, and an infinitely variable control of laser spot diameters (O0.4 to 8.5 mm) increase efficiency and resolution.

By implementing laser metal deposition (LMD) instead of laser metal fusion (LMF), Okuma's MU-8000V LASER EX offers these advantages:

  • Mid-process part inspection and material exchange
  • Coolant use in work envelope
  • Faster process than powder bed fusion
  • 3-D fabricating.

LU7000EX 2-Saddle CNC Lathe

The new LU7000EX is a powerful, 2-saddle CNC lathe with a range of spindle motor specifications to handle manufacturing of large parts. At IMTS 2018 this machine will be equipped with a bolt-on m-turret and long boring bar. It will be shown cutting an oil pipe/flange for the oil and gas industry.

The LU7000EX features a large 2 meter bed and high power spindles (45 kW, 55 kW, 75 kW) that provide stable heavy-duty cutting with full utilization of upper and lower turrets. Additional machining accuracy is achieved with the Thermo-Friendly Concept, which compensates for temperature changes that occur during manufacturing. Ceiling and front door shower coolant allow for complete chip removal and improved visibility.

Additional highlights include:

  • Max. turning diameter of 35" and workpiece weight of 24,000 lbs.
  • Four types of spindle bore diameter and five different distances between centers
  • Various machining specs include milling tool spindle, self-traveling tailstock and long boring bar that can cut internal diameter with extension of 47"
  • Precision threading with minimal chatter is possible with Okuma's Machining Navi T-g (threading).

5-Axis GENOS M460V-5AX VMC

The GENOS M460V-5AX VMC combines a full 5-axis simultaneous control with rigid, cast iron double-column construction and a high-speed spindle. These features give this CNC machine the ability to cut a variety of complex parts and exotic metals with speed and precision. At IMTS this machine will be cutting a bonnet bracket.

Key features of the GENOS M460V-5AX:

  • The spindle motor design produces less vibration and power loss at the tool tip for enhanced surface finishes
  • High precision ball screws generate smooth linear guide movement to all three axes and allow for better control of the machining process
  • Using a hypoid gear drive, the sturdy trunnion has enhanced accuracy, rigidity and table rotation speed
  • Okuma's open architecture machine control is PC-based and allows customization for optimum machining performance
  • Thermo-friendly concept
  • 5-axis auto-tuning system maintains precise machining and fine tunes the machine by measuring geometric errors and automatically adjusting as needed.
