Filler Used to Restore Prototypes Made of High-End Metals

Metaplast, an epoxy resin filler, is used to repair expensive metal prototypes or R&D models with machining errors. Metals include high-end materials like Inconel and titanium and high-performance alloys like Hastelloy. Instead of buying more of the expensive metal to produce a second model, producers simply fill in the flaws with Metaplast filler. When the restored part hardens, it is again machined and the original part can be inspected with a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) to verify that the prototype meets or exceeds specifications prior to production.

A machining company producing a variety of parts in varied metals for the aerospace industry uses Metaplast filler to restore prototypes machined from aluminum, Inconel, stainless steel and titanium. When making test parts for customers/prospects, the company sometimes has a part that may have a shortened blade, holes slightly off or too much machining in one area.

The company mixes Metaplast resin with the hardening agent and applies it to the part where repair is needed. It is formed into the titanium (or other metal) part within 10 to 15 minutes as needed and hardens within 20 to 25 minutes. The prototype is then re-machined and is ready to pass inspection. The aerospace machinist needed only a small amount of Metaplast filler to redo the part.

Metaplast can be used on any size part or type of metal. Simply clean the surface to remove any grease, rust or oil, and lightly sand to prepare the surface.

Metaplast filler has a special additive for enhanced adhesion to metal, as well as wood, glass, plastic and other materials. It hardens pore-deep and airtight with no shrinkage. It yields no hairline cracks, is vibration-resistant and allows no flaking.

It resists water, oil, gasoline and thinned acids. It is not sensitive to cold and can be worked down to 23 °F. It can be used on vertical surfaces in a single work application to a thickness of 0.75".
