Newly Patented Adjustable Cartridge Jaw Improves Accuracy, Gripping Force

"A typical adjustable jaw design, used for many years in adjustable jaws, is very difficult and costly to manufacture or repair," said a Royal Machine spokesperson.

Royal Machine's newly patented screw and brushing insert for adjustable jaws is designed to provide greater gripping force and quicker replacement.

Royal Machine & Tool has announced a new adjustable cartridge jaw designed to improve accuracy and gripping force and provide faster, easier jaw repairs.

"Older designs required the replacement of the master jaw and the adjusting screw when thread damage occurred," said Guy Byrne, Senior Vice President and General Manager. "With the new design, simply unfastening the old damaged cartridge and fastening in a new cartridge allows easier on site repair and quickly returns the fixture to service.

"In addition, the new design provides improved accuracy and greater gripping force because of its centralizing 29° angular contact Acme threaded screw and bronze bushing.

"Unlike prior chuck designs, where the thread is cut in the master jaw, the new design eliminates the thread in the jaw using the threaded cartridge inserted in a pocket of the master jaw. The problem of past chuck designs, which had the upper jaw threaded, is virtually eliminated by providing a cartridge assembly for clamping a workpiece securely and safely in a machine tool.

"A replaceable insert, with any desirable machine-in thread, is mounted to the upper master jaw. Thus, replaceable inserts may be used to accommodate adjusting screws having various complementary thread designs, including a full diameter Acme thread, in place of the square thread previously required for similar chuck designs. The Acme thread is much more economical to produce, is a stronger form of thread and is easier to repair or replace."

Designed and Developed by Royal Machine & Tool's Engineering Department, the company's newly patented adjustable cartridge jaw is also available on Royal Machine's independent adjustable jaw chucks and quad vertical chuck models.
