Advanced CNC Automation

Fagor Automation USA Corporation will display its latest complete CNC solutions. As stated by Todd Drane, Marketing Manager, "Fagor Automation's approach to technology is the incorporation of all elements of automation into a single element working together to insure the customer not only has, but can utilize the most advanced CNC technology available today."

"We now design and manufacture not just the CNC controls, but also the digital servos and motors including spindle systems as well as the linear and rotary encoder products. By controlling all aspects of automation on a machine tool we are able to design and engineer every detail to work together in harmony to provide the best possible performance, not just from the advanced algorithms of the CNC, but also the digital servo system, PLC and feedback system," said Mr. Drane.

Fagor's R&D department engineered the communication between all elements of the machine tool to work together in unison. The CNC speaks to the digital drives, which speak to the servo and spindle motors, PLC and encoders in the same language. Hence each element is able to fully utilize each other's capability. "This is actually seen in the speed, efficiency and quality of the part finish."

"The new 8060 CNC system, designed specifically to bring aerospace technology to the small and mid-size machines, is equipped with proprietary advanced features necessary for high speed machining, yet maintaining the best machining surface finish and providing maximum accuracy," said Mr. Drane.

Each 8060 is offered with a 10.4" high resolution LCD TFT color or touch screen, Ethernet, USB and Tele-Diagnosis capability. The 8060 can control up to six axes plus three separate spindles with two different execution channels and includes auto-tuning system set-up capability. 8060 performance ability includes block-processing speeds of < 1 ms while analyzing the tool path with advanced high-speed block look-ahead utilizing nano-metric resolution. Combined with the Fagor Adaptive Real-time Feed and Speed control (ARFS) the CNC analyzes the machining conditions such as spindle load, servo power, tool tip temperature and adapts both the axis feedrate and the spindle speed for maximum machining performance productivity. "The result is a reduction of cycle time coupled with a superior part finish. Extended spindle and servo motor life is also accomplished as well as improved tool utilization," said a company spokesperson.

Also equipped with the High Speed Surface Accuracy (HSSA) machining system the user receives a benefit of reduced mechanical stress on the machine. The on-board Bode diagram tool allows the measurement of the machine's frequency response, thus allowing the possibility to filter the machine vibrations incurred by the various operating conditions and environment.

CAD/CAM generated programs used to design parts commonplace in the aerospace market are large and require a specific CNC system treatment in order to obtain the maximum speed with the desired precision. The solution implemented by the 8060 CNC system to process CAD/CAM generated programs consists of the combination of splines and polynomial transitions as well as the interpretation of the NURB format utilized by CAD/CAM programs. This process helps achieve high feedrate machining while maintaining the accuracy required by all geometries to be machined.

"Ethernet communication allows the 8060 to be easily set-up as another node within the computer network, thus data exchange is fast and easy. The 8060 also contains the capability of executing a program residing on another PC, through the Ethernet port," said the spokesperson.

All of this technology is combined with Fagor Automation's exclusive IIP Programming (Interactive Icon-based Pages) Conversational Programming utilized by the 8055 CNC series. The IIP based conversational programming method simplifies programming by allowing the operator to choose the operation based upon an operation associated icon key. The operator simply enters in the data directly from the blueprint, hence, no prior CNC programming experience is required. As with prior Fagor CNC systems, the icon key brings the customer a single graphic assist screen that contains all variables necessary for the operation including finishing pass variables, thus eliminating the need to shuffle through various screen pages to input machining variable data. Pop-up browsing operation means navigation through the CNC is simple and straightforward. Custom browsing is also allowed in which operators have the ability to filter the information they wish to utilize and hide other non-essential information.

Another advanced feature is the remote machining control utilizing the Fagor Process Informer application, that allows automatic notification to a phone or email of program stoppage or error during lights-out operations.

Additional Fagor products on display at IMTS 2014 will include Fagor's 8055 series CNC, which utilizes a simple to program icon key based conversational programming system and also a built-in ISO G-code programming system within the same control. This full-featured CNC control for milling, turning, grinding or general purpose applications ranges from 2-7 axes. Provided as standard with a broad variety of high performance features including a color LCD monitor with advanced block-processing speeds and an on-board Profile Editor for easy geometry creation and insertion into the G-code program right at the CNC keyboard. All 8055 controls are equipped with 500+ MB flash memory and a USB port for quick and easy program uploading plus optional Ethernet capability. The 8055 Series CNC is available in both compact or modular configurations and provided as an economical FL (First Line) series for applications up to 4 axes or the Power series for high speed applications ranging up to 7 axes.

Fagor Automation will also be displaying the new Exposed Linear Encoders models EXA, EXG and EXT based on glass, adhesive steel tape and profile steel tape configuration. Available with TTL and 1 Vpp signals and sub-micron resolution, these exposed scales can run at a speed of up to 18,000 IPM. Designed specifically for applications requiring greater accuracy at extremely high speeds and limited mounting space, they are suitable for inspection and metrology machines, printed circuit boards, high speed linear motors, semi-conductor and even the high speed precision machine tool market. The exposed linear encoders are available with selectable reference marks and in lengths ranging from 70 mm up to 30,040 mm.

Additional feedback products include the GA and SA Absolute Linear Encoder lines for all applications requiring high accuracy absolute positioning capability. The GA series line utilizes a full sized sturdy extrusion and is offered in lengths from 5.5" up to 120". The SA/SVA series incorporates the mini-style extrusion size for applications with limited space and is offered in lengths from 2.7" to 80" in length. For maximum accuracy, utilizing a patented Thermal Determined Mounting System (TDMS) exclusively offered with the G & S series scales, contraction and expansion can be controlled. In addition, the LA series absolute steel tape encoders allow for travels up to 100 feet providing the longest Absolute Linear Encoder offered in the world, according to Fagor. Fagor offers Absolute protocols for most major CNC control applications.

Fagor will also be introducing the new nano-metric resolution precision linear encoders. The new GZ and SZ series precision high performance linear encoders are designed for maximum performance resolutions. Accuracy will be guaranteed up to 3 microns per meter. The SZ series will be offered in travel lengths of up to 2,040 mm and the GZ series in lengths up to 3,040 mm. "Every Fagor Linear Encoder is provided with a laser interferometer generated accuracy chart allowing Fagor to guarantee accuracy," said the spokesperson.

Also on display will be the Fagor line of High Resolution Angular Rotary Encoders, designed primarily for machine tool applications requiring high resolution and accuracy. Current applications include rotary tables, swivel heads, C-axes of lathe, metrology and for electrode positioning in EDM machines. Signal quality is achieved utilizing patented opto-electronic components and advanced techniques utilized during the manufacturing process that remove the un-wanted signal harmonics and allows resolutions and accuracy of up to 1 arc second. Absolute Encoder protocols utilize 23 bit or 27 bit signal outputs for maximum accuracy and resolution. These encoders consist of a range of 12 models and are available with a stub shaft or hollow shaft and can be ordered with either 1 Vpp or differential TTL signals.

Also to be displayed is the Fagor 40i True Vision Digital Readout. The True Vision has been designed as a high performance digital readout solution, which includes standard features such as a high resolution LCD TFT color screen that with clarity as viewed from any angle. Programmable conversational graphic screens provide optimum ease of operation and advanced features such as Pocket, Bolt-hole, Linear Hole and Turning Cycles remain standard. In addition, every True Vision DRO includes Solid Graphics, built-in calculator, audio feedback and travel limit alarms for maximum safety.
