Knuth Machine Tools USA will present its series of best-selling conventional vertical lathes. On display will be the VDM 1250 featuring a 49" maximum turning diameter, vertical and horizontal rams for increased productivity, and 30 HP main motor with variable speed in four gear ranges.
The VDM series vertical lathe is available in seven different sizes, from 31.5" - 102" swing. "All machines feature heavy-duty construction designed with fine grain castings, a massive headstock, heavy machine bed and wide box ways," said a company spokesperson. "They are designed for customers who need to replace aging vertical lathes that are expensive to rebuild and difficult to repair, or as an alternative to purchasing an already remanufactured machine."
The machine is equipped for O.D./I.D. turning and features a vertical ram with 5-station toolholder and horizontal side ram with 4-position toolholder. The spindle runs in a high-precision two-row roller bearing and is adjustable. Its reduction gear drive helps ensure high torque. Spindle motors are available up to 50 HP on the VDM 2600. Machining heights up to 59" are standard. Options are available for extended columns for more height capacity. Maximum part weight capacity is over 22,000 lbs.
This series includes various models that feature an inverter-controlled turntable providing infinitely variable speeds in four gear ranges from 1.2 to 315 RPM. The machines have a new control panel with a 3-axis digital read out and feature spindle speed display on the panel. VDMs are now available with optional full enclosures, turntable enclosures and chip conveyors.
Knuth will also display CNC lathes and machining centers, radial drills, band saws, grinders, milling machines and lathes, including the new Servomill and Servoturn.
"Designed and engineered in Germany by Karsten Knuth and produced with many European components, these machines combine the functionality and practicality of a manual machine with the precision of CNC machines," said the spokesperson.
The Servoturn features a mineral casting for reduced vibration, enhanced thermal stability and increased rigidity combined with linear guideways and recirculating ball screws for accuracy and high performance. According to the company, servo driven axes that translate hand movements with the precision and dynamics of modern CNC machines, variable speed spindle and electronic stops make this machine easy to operate. Standard configurations include three models starting at 16" x 43" up to 22" x 115" capacity with 10 HP main drive and 3,000 RPM spindle.
The Servomill is based around the Knuth MF series of milling machines and is upgraded with new feed technology and other features such as premium servo drives, positioning control for traveling pre-selected paths on all axes, zero backlash preloaded ballscrews and constant cutting speed. The standard configuration includes 5 HP, 4,000 RPM spindle, 60" x 12" table, automatic and rapid feeds, auto drawbar, coolant system and control panel with integrated position indicator.
