Dual Expansion Honing for Smaller Bores

Dual expansion honing with in-process size control offers benefits to small and medium volume production manufacturers as they can rough hone, gage and finish hone in the same spindle.

"Most high-end machines that do dual expansion honing require bore sizes to be at least 2" or larger. This requirement excludes a vast array of parts that have smaller bores but still require finer finishes and tighter tolerances. As a result, up until now, low and medium manufacturers of smaller bores had no choice but to use machines designed for high volume production with dedicated rough honing, gauging and finish honing stations. This increased not only initial capital expenditure, but also makes the frequent change over from part to part more expensive and time consuming as three stations have to tooled up as opposed to just one," said a company spokesperson.

The new Nagel ECO 40 Honing system can now take the dual expansion and in process gauging down to 30 mm bore diameters. Nagel's new compact hydraulic / hydraulic dual expansion system is at the heart of this innovation. Unlike the mechanical / hydraulic dual expansion system that uses inner cone and an outer cone to perform dual expansion, the hydraulic / hydraulic system accomplishes that with a single cone, saving space and hence can get into much smaller bores. Rough abrasives are expanded when the cylinder pushes down on the expansion rod and the finisher expands when the hydraulic system pulls the expansion rod.
