High-Speed 5-Axis Gantry-Type DMC
June 1, 2013
Absolute Machine Tools has introduced the APEC G20 high-speed gantry-type double-column machining center equipped with linear motors. The APEC G20 is designed for die/mold applications in the aerospace and automotive industries.
Featuring Meehanite cast iron construction, this machine offers acceleration of 0.5 G (5 m/sec2) on all axes using linear motors and precision roller-type linear ways, with a cutting feed rate of .01 - 944 IPM. Heidenhain linear scales are equipped on all axes for accuracy and repeatability. The machine base is a one-piece casting and the column design is integrated into the base for stability and rigidity.
The X and Y axes rapid rate is 2,362 IPM with Z at 1,575 IPM driven by Indromat linear motors. "Linear motors are a necessity in the die/mold and aerospace industries because they eliminate ballscrews or rack and pinion gears," said a company spokesperson. "Mechanically driven machines produce backlash (chatter), wear on mechanical parts and additional maintenance. The Indromat linear motors directly transfer high accelerating power without chatter, resulting in superfine finishes and accuracies necessary for producing high-end parts."
The G20 features a compact high-speed torque motor driven 2-axis head and high-speed integral spindles. Torque motors are designed to eliminate gears and backlash and provide high-speed rotation of 180° per second. Kessler of Germany supplies both the head and the spindle. For heavy cutting, a 12,000 RPM HSK-100A spindle with 40 HP and 106 ft-lbs of torque is recommended. For medium duty cutting or cutting of non-ferrous materials, a 24,000-RPM HSK-63A spindle with 61 HP and 54 ft-lbs of torque or 18,000 RPM HSK-63A spindle with 92 HP and 82 ft-lbs of torque are available.
Standard on the APEC G-20 is the Heidenhain iTNC-530 control. The conversational iTNC-530 is designed for tough high speed machining applications and offers the latest control features.
The G20 is available in a variety of sizes from 79" x 63" to 160" x 98" with Z travels of 35" to 47".
