Star Filter Offers Filtration Improvements

The Eriez Hydroflow Star Filter is a packaged system combining the dirty tank, filter and clean tank in one assembly, eliminating the balance problem of multiple components, according to the company.

"Each Star element is precision built and totally interchangeable," said a company spokesperson. "The vertical angle of each filter panel provides a vertical drop for the dislodged filter cake, providing gentle yet thorough settling of the vacuum compressed filter cake. Each Star element can be removed for inspection and re-installed into the Star seal without concern for misalignment or proper sealing."

The element's star shape and the filter panel's compact, rectangular design are intended to maintain structural integrity after removal from the filter. With the end caps removed, cleaning on both sides of the filter panels is possible. Other features include:

  • Stainless steel wedgewire, patented fuse-bonded stainless steel microscreen or polyester cloth filter panels are constructed to meet specific customer requirements. The panels can be cleaned on both sides.
  • Slurry distribution ring provides introduction of cellulose pre-coat.
  • Patented wet seal is a positive seal that eliminates solids by-pass.

"The clean fluid backflow incorporated into the Star Filter eliminates the need for large volumes of air (used in pressure filters) or scraper blades (used in drum filters)," said the spokesperson. "Scraper blades can force solids through and into the clean stream and also lodge dirt into the screen, reducing the open area for filtration. Fully automatic operation eliminates the complex hydraulic or air closure systems needed to seal pressure filters."

The Star Filter uses two stages of filtration. In the first stage, heavy solids settle to the bottom of the tank and are removed by the drag conveyor. In the second stage, the Star element connects to the suction side of the pump and draws the fluid through the element, trapping solids on the surface.
