The Greater Houston Partnership recently hosted a tour of a few Houston-based manufacturing companies and organizations. "Houston is one of only four regions that enjoyed net job growth in manufacturing in the past 10 years," said Joel Kotkin's, Forbes. "Houston takes the top spot in the nation for industrial employment growth with 242,212 manufacturing jobs, which is an increase of 3% from last year. While chemical and petroleum products top the list of manufacturing shipments by category, Houston-area plants are also known for excellence in everything from food and beverages to electronics and plastics. It is home to over 5,000 manufacturers who employ almost a quarter-million skilled workers, and the Houston metropolitan area accounts for 40% of the total value of Texas manufacturing shipments," said a Greater Houston Partnership spokesperson.
The tour included facility visits to Emerson's Daniel Measurement and Control Manufacturing facility and Toshiba's Industrial Products Division.
"Emerson's Daniel Measurement and Control facility is a global leader in the manufacturing of fiscal flow and energy measurement products, systems and services to the oil and gas industry. Daniel has been in the business of custody transfer and fiscal measurement for over 80 years. We originally started out with the Daniel Senior Orifice Fitting invented by Paul Daniel in 1931," said Daniel Hackett, Business Development Director Ultrasonics, Emerson Process Management. "An orifice is a plate with a hole in it and as you flow liquid or gas through it in a pipeline it measures the pressure drop across the plate allowing it to measure the flow. The company originally started in southern California to serve the oil field industry and in 1951 Daniel came to Houston. "The current facility was built to do a better job of controlling the movements of the raw materials when they come through the door. Previously when we built a orifice meter, castings traveled about a mile and a half. Now, raw castings come in, are machined and go out the door quicker," said Hackett. "Daniel's new Doosan HM1000 3-axis CNC horizontal machining center is one of the new machines that Emerson Process Management has purchased. We have made an investment of $2.5 million for new machinery," said Hackett. "The Doosan HM1000, was designed for fast, accurate and heavy-duty machining of large work pieces, combining a high torque spindle drive and powerful axis drives for a large chip removal rate. This allows excellent machining of Daniel's oil and gas ultrasonic meters and orifice fittings," said a company spokesperson.
"The products we manufacture are measuring products, controlling products and a big growth area for us has been our life cycle services. We do gas and liquid custody transfer measurement, provide ultra sonic meters for gas and liquid, provide differential pressure, metering skids and turbine meters only for liquid measurement. Orifice meters are over 50% of our product sales. 90% of small orifice meters are sold right here in North America. The big senior orifice meters are sold over seas. Most of the products we sell globally are manufactured right here in this plant. The newest technology we have out is the Daniel 4 path 3818 Cryogenic Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Meter, specifically designed for reducing flow measurement uncertainty throughout the LNG valve chain, delivering higher accuracy than static measurement methods. Ultrasonic meters are also well suited for high volume LNG transfers which equates to faster tanker loading and offloading."
Toshiba's Industrial Products Division, headquartered in Houston, TX, provides application solutions to a wide range of industries including industrial, power systems, transmission and distribution systems, and lighting systems. The tour included four plants located in Toshiba's one million square foot manufacturing facility. The motor plant manufactures low and medium voltage AC induction motors that are used in a variety of industries including oil & gas, mining, pulp and paper, food and beverage; the Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) motor plant manufactures motors for the Ford Motor Company; the control plant manufactures low and medium voltage adjustable speed drives (control systems that are used with motors); and the power electronics plant manufactures single-phase and three-phase uninterruptible power systems that are used in a variety of industries including data centers, medical facilities, industrial and telecommunications. In addition, the power electronics plant also manufactures low voltage adjustable speed drives.
