Anti-spin shaft made from 3-1/2" O.D. 4340 steel alloy by the Ganesh GTW-30 CNC lathe with a 6-5/8" bore. Threading is part of the process to manufacture the shaft and requires a lathe with rigidity.

"More horsepower, more torque and more capacity was required to increase production requirements. Current machines, with seven horsepower, would no longer do the job needed," said Moundville Metal Works President, Tony Redding.
Moundville Metal Works, Inc., founded in Alabama in 1994, is a general machining company. Some of the components machined are plate rolls up to 27" O.D. and 120" long and all types of components for the roofing industry. The shop machines Hardox 400 abrasion resistant steel components for the mining industry. The materials used in machining include brass, stainless steel, 4140 steel, 4340 steel alloy, Hardox 400/450, blocks, plates and rolls.
"After a thorough search we purchased two Ganesh machines from Metal Worx Machinery, a distributor for Ganesh Machinery. The machines purchased were the VFM 6237 machining center and the GTW-30 CNC lathe, heavy-duty machines with more torque and longer, larger travels than our present machines. Both of these machines have 30 HP spindle motors, meeting our need for more power," said Redding.
The Ganesh VFM 6237 vertical machining center has a 63" x 27" table. The 30 HP spindle motor produces 8,000 RPM on the spindle. "The 1,000 PSI thru-spindle coolant is a definite plus," said Redding. "The high-speed arm type automatic tool changer with 30 tools is designed to improve productivity. The Mitsubishi control comes with a three-year warranty which gives us peace of mind knowing we have the support."
Some of the components machined on the VFM 6237 are square shafts with drilled and tapped holes. "The machine with its powerful 30 HP motor is rigid and is a smooth and quiet running machine," said Redding.
The Ganesh GTW-30 CNC lathe is a big bore machine with a 6-5/8" bore hole. The 30 HP spindle motor provides Moundville Metal Works with the power and torque needed for heavy metal removal. "The heavy duty tailstock with air assist moves smoothly and adds rigidity during heavy turning," said Redding. "Having a turret on the machine with eight tools increases productivity during turning and now we have the capability to turn longer shafts and other long components from tough materials."
An anti-spin shaft machined from 3-1/2" O.D. 4340 steel alloy material is turned on the Ganesh GTW-30 CNC lathe. "Threading is part of the process for the shaft and requires a machine with good rigidity such as the GTW-30," said Redding.
"Our manufacturing challenges with not enough horsepower are solved. Also, the finishes on the components coming off the VFM 6237 are so much smoother than we have had before. Our machinists were able to learn to run the machines with on-site training and in a short time were able to make parts," said Redding.
Moundville Metal Works Owner, Tony Redding, has a degree in machining from Shelton State College and worked at Dana Corporation and local machine shops before starting his own business.
Along with the two new Ganesh CNC machines, Moundville Metal Works has additional milling machines, lathes with capacities up to 160" between centers, a boring mill, Blanchard grinder and other machines.
"More horsepower, more torque and more capacity with the new Ganesh machines has significantly improved quality and productivity. We have received more orders for a greater numbers of parts resulting from increased production capabilities," said Redding.
