Precision Grinding Inc. (PGI) announces the arrival of its new Yama Seiki GS-4000L3Y CNC turning center. Birmingham, AL-based Precision Grinding has a customer base all over the United States providing a full service product pallet of raw material, plate cutting, grinding, machining, inspection and custom fabrication.
"The new CNC lathe increases turning capabilities and reduces the number of set-ups and overall cycle time thus lowering cost of production. Our new machine tool will allow us to swing workpieces up to 27.55" in diameter and lengths up to 114". The 60 HP 2-speed geared headstock coupled with live tooling capabilities of 6,000 RPM and a 7.5 HP base mount tooling turret allows for heavy milling and Y-axis capabilities of 4.75" travel. We can perform off-center drilling and milling operations, thus eliminating a second operation on an additional machine. The addition of a fully programmable hydraulic steady rest and MT#6 tailstock makes this machine a one stop machining system for shaft work and other large machined components," said a PGI spokesperson.
Prior to the machine installation, Miles Cunningham, CEO of PGI, and Brandon Elliott, CNC Programming Manager at PGI, traveled with their local Yama Seiki Representative, C&S Machine Tools, to the Yama Seiki manufacturing facility in Taiwan. Yama Seiki is a division of the Goodway Group, parent company of Goodway Lathes, Awea Machining Centers and Yama Seiki USA, Inc. After a meeting with Edward Yang, President of the Goodway Group and founder of Goodway Lathes, PGI personnel went onto the assembly floor where a run-off was performed on a part designed by PGI programmer Brandon Elliott. PGI toured the other Goodway Group manufacturing facilities to see where and how Goodway, Awea and Yama Seiki machines are made. Both Cunningham and Elliott were very impressed and stated that anybody considering purchasing a machine tool should make the trip to see the Goodway Group facilities and its hard working and hospitable staff.
"Since the machine has been installed at PGI, the lathe capability provides expanded flexibility for new and existing PGI customers by bringing the turning capability in house for better quality control plus faster part throughput in order to offer our customers better pricing and greater quality," said the PGI spokesperson.
