Software Enhances 5-Axis Manufacturing

Hermle Machine Company recently showcased the incorporation of the SolidCAM's iMachining software on Hermle machines. "Ensuring that owners of 5-axis Hermle machines can leverage state-of-the-art software, iMachining gives users the tools they need to satisfy the highest level of demand in machining," said a Hermle spokesperson.

Hermle Machine Company North America first demonstrated this new capability during its two-day Open House in Franklin, WI, earlier this year. Attendees witnessed true 5-axis machine capabilities on a variety of Hermle machines, including SolidCAM's iMachining software on a Hermle C32U with Heidenhain 530 iTNC control.

"iMachining is a cutting angle based algorithm that controls how the tool is engaged to the material, eliminating any potential of an overloaded tool," said the spokesperson. "The patented iMachining Wizard capitalizes on known machine, tool and material information to generate a symphony of cutting parameters coordinated for each level of aggressiveness."

When combined with a Hermle machine, the company reported that iMachining optimizes pre-existing capabilities by:

  • Allowing for greater depths of cut and using a range from 10° minimum cutting angle to 80° maximum cutting angle in order to allow the tool path to morph from one shape to another with longer cuts and less repositioning, while never over-engaging the tool
  • Providing higher cutting velocities, ultimately increasing precision
  • Dynamically managing feedrates to ensure that chip thickness at the cutting angle remains the same - keeping the load on the tool constant
  • Introducing less stress and wear on the tool, resulting in longer tool life and decreased costs.

"iMachining will make any milling cutter perform to its full potential with minimal programming efforts, compared to a traditional style tool path." said Robert Komljenovic, President of Hermle Machine Company. "This software provides the user with an easy way to elevate the tool path performance and precision. When you combine Hermle's true 5-axis machine capabilities with the pathway performance of iMachining software, you get a milling machine package that is extremely profitable and competitive."

SolidCAM also includes several optimization routines with iMachining such as Regionalization, Tool-Down Detour Repositioning, Spiral Efficiency, Separation Channels and Step Up Staircase Reduction to help maximize the efficiency of the tool path and eliminate wasted motion.
