Makino offers machine technologies and engineering services for various types of machine automation for die/mold applications, including hard milling, graphite milling, 5-axis machining, and sinker and wire EDMing. The D300 5-axis VMC is designed to provide superior sustained dynamic accuracy in full five-face machining applications. Equipped with core-cooled ballscrews and temperature-controlled direct-drive motors and spindle, the D300 provides thermally stable machining conditions for a high degree of precision and finishing quality. The design of the direct-drive rotary axes gives manufacturers the speed and positioning repeatability to be productive in a wide variety of complex, 3-D workpieces.
Makino's EDAF2 sinker EDM is designed for manufacturers facing uncontrolled thermal environments and long hours of unattended burning. "Its new mechanical design and improved servo system ensure rapid response to spark-gap monitoring circuits, allowing for improved rigidity, reduced thermal distortion and cycle-time reductions of 10 to 20 percent in burns common to today's job-shop applications," said a Makino spokesperson. With ArcFree technology, manufacturers can burn any application fully unattended. Even applications with unfavorable electrode/workpiece geometry can easily be started with unusually high current density.
The V22 Graphite VMC is designed for both precision electrode production and high-accuracy die/mold component machining. "The V22 Graphite offers the rigidity and speed necessary to produce tight-tolerance geometries for today's most complex electrode and hard-metal mold applications," said the spokesperson. A fully enclosed splash guard and dust collector completely seal the entire machining area to prevent graphite dust from escaping. In addition to its efficiency in graphite workpieces, the machine's wide-ranging spindle design offers capability for dry machining in variety of hardened materials, including steels and castings. "The V22 graphite is also outfitted with Makino's Professional 5 control and the latest iteration of Super Geometric Intelligence (SGI.4) software for the highest level of prevision and lowest cycle times achievable in complex cavities and cores," said the spokesperson.
Makino's U53j Wire EDM is targeted to applications in precision plastic injection molds, engineered plastics, precision stamping tooling, and medical and micro-manufacturing. These machines are capable of producing geometric accuracies of +/-0.00008 inches to 0.00012 inches, and surface finishes down to 0.8 um Ry in tool steel and 0.5 um Ry in carbide. Static axis accuracies of 3 um for straightness and 4 um for squareness and parallelism are delivered from the factory.
