DMG MORI's new ULTRASONIC 30 linear 5-axis machine is equipped with the new Operate 4.5 on Siemens' 840D solutionline. Operate 4.5 is the new system platform from DMG MORI for all machines with Siemens controls, from the entry level to the high-end category. Operate 4.5 is built to encompass the complete automation technology of a machine tool, from the drives to the CNC control. "Operate 4.5 offers a uniform user interface for all technologies," said a company spokesperson.
New App
The ULTRASONIC 30 linear is also now available with CELOS, which is designed to simplify and accelerate the machining process. CELOS apps enable continuous and digitized management, documentation and visualization of job, process and machine data. CELOS is compatible with MRP and ERP systems and can be networked with CAD / CAM applications.
New Design
The new DMG MORI design introduced in 2014 has now also been implemented for the ULTRASONIC 30 linear. "It has even more functionality and user friendliness," said the spokesperson. "The large viewing windows, for example, enable optimum monitoring of the manufacturing process. The accessibility of the work area and chip flow during machining also enhance user comfort.
"The machine housing features a special fine structured coating," continued the spokesperson. "These long-life surfaces feature higher scratch resistance and better overall protection against damage." The new DMG MORI design is available in either black or white.
Reduced Process Forces
Due to a standardized HSK-40 spindle holder, the ULTRASONIC actuator holders are designed to be changed over automatically in the milling spindle. These include piezo elements that are activated with an inductive system via the spindle with a frequency between 20 and 50 kHz. "The actual tool rotation is superimposed with additional kinematics in the longitudinal direction," said ULTRASONIC Product Manager Benedikt Brocks. "An amplitude in the 10 um / 000.4 inch range is generated at the cutting edge of the tool. This oscillating interruption of contact results in better lubrication and cooling of the cutting edge as well as optimum removal of particles from the active zone." According to the company, the ULTRASONIC superimposition of vibrations at the cutting edge of the diamond tool reduces the process forces by up to 40%, depending on the material.
"This results in longer tool service life and excellent surface qualities of up to Ra <0.1 um / 0.000004 inch for hard-brittle high-performance materials such as glass, ceramics, corundum and other materials that are difficult to machine such as hard metal or fiber composites," said the spokesperson. The ULTRASONIC 30 linear is designed to combine high-speed cutting and efficient ULTRASONIC grinding of advanced materials in a single machine, allowing for a large range of materials to be machined.
Compact Footprint
"The ULTRASONIC 30 linear 5-axis machine has a high-precision, long-term stable gantry design which has a compact footprint of 4.6 m2 / 49.5 square feet with dual drive in the Y-axis and integral temperature control concept," said the spokesperson. The drives, guides, spindle, machine bed, control cabinet and all media are temperature-controlled.
The linear drives in X, Y, Z are designed to achieve maximum accelerations of > 1.2 g and 50 m/minute / 1,968.5 IPM rapid traverse. The machine has a large swivel range in the B-axis of the worktable of +/- 120° and up to ø250 mm / 9.8". The ULTRASONIC 30 linear has a fully integrated rotating 360° rotary axis with torque technology and is optimally equipped for flexible 5-axis simultaneous machining. The basic machine in the standard version is equipped with a 19 kW / 25.5 HP motor spindle with integrated shaft cooling, HSK-40 tool holder and 40,000 RPM. In addition to the standard 30-pocket tool changer with double gripper, the chain magazine is optionally available with 60 or 120 tool pockets.
Contour Accuracy
"The machine is designed for dimensional and contour accuracy and the best possible surface qualities as well as increases in productivity for grinding and drilling operations of materials such as optical glass, Zerodur and sapphire. Applications include the production of thin-walled lightweight structures and highly accurate slotted hole drillings in optical components (e.g., mirror mounts and gyroscopes), complete machining of watch components from cast zirconium oxide and sapphire (watch cases, steady rests, watch faces and clockwork elements) as well as implants from wear-resistant high performance materials for medical engineering," said Brocks.
"The sectors of composite production as well as composite repair - particularly of fiber composites such as CFK, GFK or CMC - has emerged as the new future market for the ULTRASONIC technologies," said the spokesperson. "Double feedrates with the same component quality can be achieved due to the reduction of process forces in ULTRASONIC machining by up to 40%. There is also no fiber splitting, delamination or formation of built-up edges with ULTRASONIC machining."
