Multispindle CNC Lathe Provides Energy Efficiency, Flexibility

INDEX Corporation offers the MS40C fully CNC multispindle designed for nearly unlimited operations on small workpieces from bar up to 40 mm (1.57") diameter or for chucking up to 120 mm (4.7"). "Several innovative features make the MS40C quick, precise, energy efficient and dramatically more productive than multiple stand-alone turning centers at a lower cost of ownership," said a company spokesperson.

"With six fully independent liquid-cooled, hollow-shaft CNC spindle drives each capable of up to 7,000 RPM, the MS40C includes a main spindle drive with increased stiffness and hydrostatic guide bushings on each carrier slide," said the spokesperson. "These guide bushings eliminate wear and the transmission of vibration to the tool."

According to the company, the main spindle provides quick acceleration and high torque, helping to reduce cycle times. "With liquid cooling, spindle and drum cooling is accomplished away from the work area through a local or central cooling system," said the spokesperson. "Heat can be released into the plant to utilize heat energy or outdoors to lessen the summer cooling burden."

Designed as a modular system, the range of MS40C multispindles includes flexible machine configurations. Across the range, the MS40C can be equipped with up to 35 axes, 12 identical CNC tool carriers with one or two axes, plus one or two 10,000 RPM synchronized spindles with 150 mm travel in Z and up to six tools for backworking. Two tool slides approach each spindle, permitting two tools to be simultaneously in the cut on each part.

"The modular INDEX multispindle design INDEX permits the machine to be built with options that fit a wide range of requirements including polygon turning/milling/drilling/gear hobbing," said the spokesperson. "A bar loader, stock reel or robot loader can be used with the MS40C.

"The V-shaped approach of the two tool carriers in every spindle position means external and internal machining can be done with fixed or driven tools. Furthermore, the machine can also be configured as a double three-spindle machine. The available C-axis allows complete machining of complex workpieces in short cycles. With the available Y-axis, eccentric machining can also be performed."

INDEX's trademark open front work area is designed to provide a freely accessible, ergonomic work area and unrestricted chip flow.
