New HBM for Complex Machining

The HBM-5.11" ~ PB130H is shown with a 40-station tool changer and no splash covers.

The new HBM-5.11" ~ PB130H horizontal boring mill (HBM) from Neway CNC-USA is designed for complex machining of all types of parts. The HBM-5.11" ~ PB130H is designed to mill, drill, thread, ream, bore and tap on four sides in a single set-up. With the "Cogsdill Preparation" and an optional right-angle head, it can do taper bores, taper threads and five-sided machining. "The modern control conception and compact design provide high productivity and has the accuracy for single-part, small-batch and medium-batch production applications," said a company spokesperson.

The body structure of the machine is a "reverse T" shape design. "The large span design allows machining with high rigidity and high strength," said the spokesperson. "Its high technology design embodies the idea of human-machine engineering integration."

The machine's base optimizes a computer design layout of M-type muscle cells with the application of advanced finite element analysis (FEA) software. "This enhances its strength and rigidity so that each part can perform the best and ensure stability and the accuracy required," said the spokesperson.

The closed frame structure of the HBM-5.11" ~ PB130H has double columns and thick vertical and horizontal muscle design ribbing in the cavity, which is the same as Neway's larger floor type HBMs. This design improves the resistance of column to torsional deflection.

The machine's high-precision spindle unit is driven by a 75 HP AC servo spindle motor. "To achieve stepless speed regulation, a hydraulic gear reducer with two steps (1:4 ratio) allows speed changes resulting with a high rotational speed, low vibration and a high output of power that can be used for high-speed cutting," said the spokesperson. A hydraulic balancing system is designed for headstock (Y-axis) movement to ensure Y-axis accuracy.

Use of advanced high-inertia servo motors allows the machine to achieve 4-axis feed drives.

"C3 level ball screws and absolute optical scales from HEIDENHAIN form a closed-loop feedback system identifying the problem of machining errors when the part is being processed," said the spokesperson.

Standard equipment for the worktable is an inertia servo motor selected for the full contouring fourth axis with the standard table load being 15 tons with optional tables for both 25 tons and 40 tons. The machine is also equipped with the option of either a FANUC 31-i or a Siemens 840DSL CNC numerical control system.
