Two New Swiss-Type Lathes Available

Hanwha Machinery America has introduced two new Swiss-type lathes. "The two new XE series machines were designed to attract first-time Swiss users and cost-conscious buyers with machining capabilities usually reserved for higher cost machines," said a company spokesperson.

According to the company, the XE20H has seven cutting axes and the XE20J has six cutting axes. Both Hanwha models offer 10,000 RPM on the main spindle, longer Z-axis strokes with shorter bar remnants than normal, wider drive belts and 6,000 RPM on the four cross drills.

The Hanwha model XE20J is equipped with a 10,000 RPM main spindle and an 8,000 RPM sub-spindle. Four cross milling / drilling spindle units with 6,000 RPM are standard. C-axis control is standard on the main spindle. The Hanwha FANUC Series I control is standard. The XE20J 2-axis sub-spindle travels to a 4-position back working station with static toolholders.

"Simultaneous machining can be performed on the main and sub-spindles," said the spokesperson. "The Z-axis stroke on the XE20J is 8.268 inches (210 mm) and bar stock is supported by a synchronized guide bushing. A newly designed guide bushing assembly reduces remnant length by 2.0 inches compared to previous models." There are five I.D. tool positions for front or rear facing drilling, tapping, boring or other I.D. tooling to be mounted. A convenient parts separator and parts collection box are supplied to catch finished parts ejected from the sub-spindle.

The following features are also available on the Hanwha model XE20J:

  • A new "Outer Toggle" design for the sub-spindle collet Open / Close
  • Dual air purge system at the guide bushing assembly and sub-spindle collet assembly
  • Width of the sub-spindle drive belt increased 40%
  • New design of the base casting of the machine for increased rigidity.

"The Hanwha model XE20H offers all the features of the XE20J and more," said the spokesperson. C-axis is standard on the main and sub-spindle. The 4-position back working station is supplied with two static tool positions and two driven milling / drilling spindle units. Both the XE20H and the XE20J have a machine weight of 5,952 lbs.
