Suncoast Technical College Precision Machining and CNC Automation Program Earns National Accreditation from NIMS
October 1, 2015
Not quite two years since its inception, the Precision Machining and CNC Automation Program at Suncoast Technical College in Sarasota, FL, became nationally accredited as of June 19, 2015. "Based on industry-set standards for quality, NIMS Accreditation is the highest benchmark for metalworking training programs in the United States," said a spokesperson.
By becoming accredited, the staff and faculty at Suncoast Tech have met NIMS quality requirements, which include a Self-Evaluation, earning of NIMS National Credentials by faculty and by students, and an intensive two-day On-Site evaluation at the college facility.
The On-Site Evaluation occurred in spring 2015 and was conducted by a NIMS Evaluation Team which included:
- Certified Evaluation Team Leader: James Wall - NIMS (VA)
- Industry Representative: Bob Skodzinsky - Haas HTEC Network (FL).
After a comprehensive facility inspection, observation of active students, plus in-depth interviews with program faculty, administrators and local employers, the Evaluation Team gave the program above-average ratings in the evaluation areas of:
- Program Purpose
- Program Features
- Program Facility
- Equipment, Tooling and Measuring Devices
- Program Administration
- Program Faculty.
This accreditation is based on the industry-written and industry-approved Machining Level I Skill Standard, with a focus on eight credentials, which many students have already earned. Those skills areas include:
- CNC Milling Programming, Setup and Operations
- Job Planning, Benchwork and Layout
- Measurement, Materials and Safety
- Milling I.
