Glacern Machine Tools has introduced its flagship CNC vise, the Glacern Modular Vise (GMV). Designed and manufactured in the USA, the GMV features a versatile design that allows fast set-ups in three modes. "The GMV can replace three conventional vises while improving machine clearances and offering cost-effective quick-change mounting," said a company spokesperson.
"When we designed the GMV, we started with a single unique concept: modular," said Glacern co-founder Steven Lee. "During five years of research and development we added a lot of refinements - exclusive details that make this vise remarkably flexible and easy to use."
At the heart of the GMV is a patented interchangeable mounting pin system that allows easy conversion from double to single station use. Additional features were added to create flexibility.
"The center jaw is not just removable," said Lee. "We designed it to allow a choice of three index points that give the operator up to 1.75 inches of additional capacity. Jaw placement is easy and accurate due to the interchangeable pins that allow different vise modes. Users get a total of three potential center jaw configurations. That is all part of mode one, the double station mode.
"When the center jaw is completely removed, users have a choice of either mode two or three. Mode two is a conventional single station vise, while mode three features a fixed front jaw, reverse single station configuration. It is just a matter of which jaw is immobilized."
Locking an outside jaw is achieved with Glacern's exclusive mounting pins. "Unlike convertible vises that require an external plate, the GMV maintains the same compact footprint in all modes - a real advantage where table surface is at a premium," said the spokesperson.
Also maintaining the compact profile is Glacern's new SquareDrive leadscrew. A 1/2" socket is built into a completely sealed vise screw so that the end of the drive screw sits flush against the surface. This saves space when clearances are tight, and allows users their choice of any 1/2" drive wrench. To use a traditional vise handle, operators can choose the traditional leadscrew option and use a regular vise handle or socket wrench.
Glacern is also offering newly designed products to make squaring up the GMV quick and easy. "Our quick-change Cage Lock system offers the productivity of zero-point mounting in a simple, cost-effective design," said Lee. "These designs allow our customers to spend less time on set-up and more time making chips."
