Makino Technology Expo 2015 Sept. 16 - 17

Makino will hold its upcoming Makino Technology Expo 2015 September 16 - 17 from 8 AM to 6:30 PM in Makino's Die/Mold and EDM Technology Center in Auburn Hills, MI. "This biennial exhibition will highlight new manufacturing processes, techniques, philosophies and strategies vital to transforming businesses for greater success in the global marketplace," said a company spokesperson.

The event will include demonstrations of some of Makino's latest high-precision machining technologies, including machines equipped with the new Professional 6 (Pro6) control, updated sinker EDM technologies with the new Hyper-i control, the D800Z 5-axis vertical machining center (VMC) with pallet change system and U6 H.E.A.T. wire EDM. More than 20 machines will be under power with multiple demonstrations displaying state-of-the-art machining process solutions.

Presentations are scheduled to cover a wide variety of manufacturing solutions from automation systems to closed-loop processing techniques and flexible workholding solutions, plus a special featured guest presentation to provide attendees with an in-depth look at today's tooling industry and the future of tool and die manufacturing.

Featured Machines and Demonstrations

At the expo, manufacturers will have the opportunity to meet with Makino engineers for one-on-one consultations to identify machining solutions that best fit their needs. Attendees can also observe over 20 different machine demonstrations, expert presentations and customer testimonials, including:

• Automotive lens mold manufacturing: The 6-axis MCC2013-VG horizontal machining center (HMC) will rough, semi-finish and finish machine an automotive lens mold in a single set-up.

• Die/mold automation cell: Attendees can see the cost savings and throughput enhancements of automated die/mold machining cells, intelligently designed with full integration of multiple manufacturing disciplines.

• Precision 5-axis machining of 1.1 ton workpiece: The D800Z 5-axis VMC configured with a pallet changer and the new Pro6 control will perform complex cutting processes in a variety of difficult 5-axis applications, including simultaneous 5-axis machining of a large 1.1 ton workpiece.

• High-accuracy die-cast die cutting with Pro6 control: Attendees will learn about the new features, benefits and efficiencies of the Pro6 control on the high-precision V56i VMC as it machines precision die cast die details.

• Micromachining of telecommunication tooling: Participants will learn about the wire threading capabilities of the ultra-precision UPN-01 horizontal wire EDM in the machining of a telecommunications tool.

• U6 H.E.A.T. wire EDM machining: The U6 H.E.A.T. wire EDM and its WIZ programming system are designed for exceptional straightness in tall workpieces.

• High-speed rib detail EDMing: The new EDNC6 sinker EDM with high-speed rib head and HyperCut technology will rapidly produce rib features with low electrode wear.

Additional presentations and demonstrations will include: Makino's high-speed rib sinker EDM technology, new Hyper-i control for sinker EDMs, FCS clamping, closed-loop fine-hole EDMing on the EDAF3-FH sinker EDM with on-board 3-D scanning from Alicona Imaging, Millutensil spotting presses, high-performance horizontal machining of a press die application using Makino's proprietary Super Geometric Intelligence 5 (SGI.5), high-speed roughing and finishing of a graphite scroll electrode on the F3 graphite VMC, simultaneous 5-axis machining of a titanium medical part on the F5-5XR, sub-micron tolerance machining on the iQ300, machining of stamping die details on the PS95, ±2.0 µm accuracy, machining of a precision die plate on the V33i, HyperCut 2-pass machining on the U3 wire EDM, machining of precise 75-micron start holes on the EDFH1 fine hole sinker EDM, EDAF2 with Hyper-i control sinker EDM.

Guest Presenter

Attendees will experience an in-depth look at today's tooling industry from Laurie Harbour, President and CEO of Harbour Results Inc. Harbour will discuss performance benchmarking, operational data, financial information, key industry trends and insights on what the future holds for tool and die manufacturers.

Harbour has over 25 years of experience in strategic planning, benchmarking, operational assessments, lean manufacturing and performance enhancement. She works closely with automotive and manufacturing companies on analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, identifying existing gaps and risks and developing a strategic transformation process to achieve sustainable improvements, ultimately mitigating risk and improving the health of organizations. Laurie assists companies, develops short- and long-term strategies, improves operations and reduces risks. She visits hundreds of manufacturing plants each year capturing best practices and driving results.

Makino's Technology Center is located at Superior and Lapeer roads (M-24), one mile from I-75 and M-24, off E. Walton Boulevard. It is 31 miles from the Greater Detroit Airport and near The Palace at Auburn Hills, a major sports venue in the area.
