Portfolio of Mechanical Welding Operations for Cryogenic Applications

"The Perma-Cyl storage system allows users to enjoy the benefits of on-site gas delivery," said a company spokesperson. "Perma-Cyls are reliable, efficient and more economical than comparable transportable cylinders. Designed for a higher level of thermal efficiency, Perma-Cyls can hold their gas contents longer with lower pressure rise than other similar sized vessels. Their thermal quality limits product losses during extended periods of little gas use."

Chart offers a complete line of stainless steel cryogenic freezers with vial capacities ranging from 3,200 to 94,000. "Vapor units maintain -190 °C at the top storage box and achieve long holding times and low LN2 consumption," said a company spokesperson.

Sandvik has developed a complete portfolio of grades with mechanical properties specifically developed for welding in cryogenic applications. "Designed to help customers achieve trouble-free mechanical welding operations, the grades provide weldments that can withstand the tough conditions which normally prevail in cryogenic applications," said a company spokesperson.

The spokesperson stated that the grades also offer a balanced content of microelements with minimum impurity levels to reduce the risk of hot cracking during welding operations. "This ensures optimum arc stability and fluidity, with minimal spatter and good wetting properties," said the spokesperson. "Considerable savings can be achieved as a result of reduced cleanup and reworking costs.

"In Sandvik's grades for cryogenic applications, the chemical compositions are optimized in terms of Charpy-impact toughness. They also offer high tensile strengths, high yield strengths, good ductility and uniform elongation. Controlled ferrite content provides resistance to micro fissuring.

"Typically, applications and standards include manufacturing of dewars, containers, tanks, cryostats and transfer systems for transportation and storage of liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), liquid nitrogen and liquid helium. They also help users to comply with a wide range of standards such as AWS, SFA, ASME Section II, IX and ASME U, UM, R, S; üV certification, CRN registration; and CE/PED certification."

The cryogenic program includes the following:

  • Solid Wire
    • Nickel: Sanicro 60, NiCrMo-3; Sanicro 72HP, NiCr-3
    • Stainless: Sandvik 25.22.2.LMn; Sandvik 20.25.5.LCu, 385; Sandvik 19.9L, 308L
