"Whether turning large shafts for windmills, rethreading drill pipe or machining blowout preventers, the ST-55 turning center and EC-1600 HMC from Haas Automation provide the size and power necessary to handle large-volume machining," said a Haas spokesperson.
The ST-55 is a heavy-duty, large-through-bore turning center that is designed to be rigid, accurate and thermally stable. The machine's twin-chuck capability, high-torque spindle and 12.5" (318 mm) diameter through-bore make it ideal for machining heavy pipes and fittings, large couplers and long rollers. It has a maximum cutting capacity of 25.5" x 80" (648 x 2032 mm) with swings of 34.5" (876 mm) over the front apron and 25.5" (648 mm) over the cross slide. A servo-driven tailstock (MT5 taper) is standard, and a steady rest provision is available for additional support of long shafts.
A 55 HP (41 kW) vector dual-drive unit powers the ST-55's spindle through a Haas-built two-speed gearbox to provide 4,250 ft-lbs. (5,762 Nm) of torque in low gear, with a maximum spindle speed of 1,000 RPM in high gear. Both front and rear A1-20 spindle noses accept a variety of aftermarket large-diameter manual and pneumatic chucks.
The ST-55 comes equipped with a massive hydraulically clamped 12-station bolt-on style tool turret that accepts 7.25" (184 mm) split boring bar holders, standard BOT toolholders and 1.25" (32 mm) turning sticks. Standard equipment includes rigid tapping, a color remote jog handle, a 15" color LCD monitor and built-in USB connectivity. Available high-productivity options include a belt-type chip conveyor, high-pressure coolant systems and more.
"To tackle the types of jobs common in oilfield work, the ST-55 is available with Haas Automation's proprietary Intuitive Programming System, which includes powerful built-in threading and rethreading cycles for both straight and tapered threads - something found on no other machine," said the spokesperson.
For large-volume horizontal milling, the Haas EC-1600 HMC features a 64" x 50" x 32" (1,626 x 1270 x 813 mm) work cube and a 7,500 RPM 50-taper geared-head spindle. A 30 HP (22.4 kW) vector drive system provides 340 ft-lbs. (460 Nm) of torque for heavy cutting, and the 64" x 36" (1,626 x 914 mm) T-slot table supports parts and fixtures up to 10,000 lbs. (4,536 kg). A 30+1 tool side-mount tool changer is standard, with a 50+1 tool SMTC available. Other standard features include a color LCD remote jog handle, rigid tapping, an enclosure exhaust system, a 15" color LCD monitor and USB connectivity.
For machining four sides of a workpiece in a single set-up, an integrated 4th-axis rotary platter is available for the EC-1600. With a 30" (762 mm) platter diameter and 10,000 lbs. (4536 kg) weight capacity, the platter easily positions very large parts to nearly any angle for machining, or provides fully interpolated motion for contouring and complex surfaces.
For high-speed machining operations, an optional 10,000 RPM 50-taper geared-head spindle is available for the EC-1600. Other high-productivity options include high-speed machining software with full look-ahead, high-pressure through-spindle coolant systems, the Haas Intuitive Probing System (tool and work offset), Ethernet connectivity and more.
For shops wanting more Z-axis travel for long tools or larger parts, Haas also offers the EC-1600ZT, which is identical to the standard EC-1600 while providing an additional 8" (203 mm) of Z-axis travel.
