Arthur Machinery offers South Bend Lathe machines in the Florida and Puerto Rico markets. According to the company, South Bend Lathe Works was founded in 1906 by the O'Brien twin brothers after they graduated from Purdue University in Indiana.
"Within a quarter of a century, South Bend Lathe Works became a large manufacturer of precision metalworking lathes with customers in more than 88 countries and machines which were used in every type of industry including schools, home workshops and large manufacturers," said a company spokesperson. According to the company, some famous customers included Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, and some of the company's largest customers are the U.S. Navy and Army as well as many departments of the U.S. government.
"Utilizing Meehanite bed castings, Allen-Bradley controls, and German and Japanese precision-made bearings, we make sure that no aspect of the quality is compromised. Entry-level lathes for schools and home shops are available as well as heavy-duty lathes for toolrooms and job shops. There are still more than 100,000 South Bend Lathes in operation today," said the spokesperson.
