Hexagon Metrology was recognized at the dedication ceremony of the new Siemens Energy Large Manufacturing Solutions Laboratory at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). A select audience was introduced to the newly established laboratory within the university's Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC). Hexagon Metrology was recognized for its four-year loan of a high-speed, high-precision Leitz PMM-F 30.20.16 coordinate measuring machine (CMM) to the university. "The new measurement system, housed in the Hexagon Precision Metrology Facility within the laboratory, is a key component to further support the collaboration of industry and academia for large-scale precision manufacturing," said a company spokesperson. "The technology partnership also symbolizes Hexagon Metrology's commitment to develop the next wave of engineering talent to advance manufacturing industries."
According to the company, the university's Leitz CMM is one of the largest in the world and can measure components up to 3 x 2 x 1.6 m in size (9.8 x 6.6 x 5.25 feet) with a table load of 8,000 kg (17,637 lbs.). The CMM is suitable for high-accuracy measurements of medium- to large-sized workpieces and gears.
"In today's highly competitive world, manufacturers are in a constant state of transformation to optimize their operations," said Angus Taylor, President and CEO of Hexagon Metrology, Inc. "It is an enormous challenge, so when an opportunity for close collaboration presents itself, especially with partners such as Siemens and UNCC/EPIC, we are excited to participate, learn and help to develop new methodologies."
