Heavy-Duty Vertical Turning Center

DN Solutions (formerly Doosan Machine Tools) will introduce the PUMA V9300M with automatic tool changer (ATC), the latest member of its family of vertical turning centers (VTC), at IMTS 2022. This high-performance, heavy-duty vertical mill-drill turning center was developed in response to requests from aerospace customers for a VTC that could handle bigger parts and complete them in a single set-up.

The PUMA V9300M w/ATC is a step up in size from the PUMA V8300 but has a more compact footprint than the PUMA V1100. It was designed for large diameter parts requiring up to a 32" (800 mm) chuck and has half of the footprint of a horizontal turning center large enough to manage the same diameter parts. The vertical design facilitates loading of heavy workpieces, which helps to ensure higher chucking accuracy and allows for higher spindle speeds. Mill-drill capability reduces the need for secondary machining and the time spent on additional machine set-ups.

A 12-tool ATC CAPTO C6 taper makes the PUMA V9300M flexible on the fly, which reduces stopping and starting. It can run all day without a single manual tool change. "Operators can load it up in the morning and be prepared for a wide variety of machining situations, such as small runs that require a variety of different tools or components that require a special tool, such as a boring bar, to complete. It can even be filled with sharp-edged spares for workpieces that rapidly wear down tools," said a company spokesperson.

Like the PUMA 8300, the new machine has a boxway construction, a reinforced bed frame and a rigid gearbox structure that combine to provide a strong structure. The spindle motor delivers 60.3 HP (45 kW) of power, 3,276 ft-lbs. (4,442 Nm) of torque and has a maximum rotating speed of 1,800 RPM. "This combination allows the PUMA V9300M w/ATC to handle exotic materials such as high-performance alloys of titanium, Inconel, Hastelloy, stainless steel and other alloys with ease," said the spokesperson.

"The PUMA V9300M w/ATC is an ideal choice for the military and commercial aerospace markets as well as the oil and gas industry," said Jim Shiner, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at DN Solutions America. "Its compact size and versatility also make it popular with job shops."

The PUMA V9300M w/ATC comes standard with the latest version of the FANUC 0i Plus control, which enhances operating convenience by incorporating common-design buttons and layout. It features improved file management, a new modern look and a user interface that is more readily accepted by the up-and-coming workforce.
