Military Helicopters Utilize Gundrilling
September 1, 2019
The DeHoff 1536T is a gundrilling machine used to manufacture high-performance military helicopters. Several of the helicopter's drivetrain components are gundrilled to produce hollow centers, which reduces mass while maintaining high rotational rigidity.
The 1536T has two gundrilling spindles with each spindle on an independent slide. An operator control panel is installed on both sides of the machine, enabling each gundrilling spindle to be independently controlled. This provides the end user with the flexibility to run two different parts simultaneously.
The machine has a 1.5" (38 mm) diameter gundrilling capacity and a 36" (914 mm) slide travel. "It features steel box ways and hand-scraped mating components (instead of linear guide ways and milled surfaces). This results in enhanced vibration damping, extended tool life and improved surface finish," said a company spokesperson. DeHoff gundrilling machines are designed and manufactured by Kays Engineering in Marshall, MO.
