Recently, UPM Additive Solutions visited Ohio State's Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME). The purpose was to mark 2+ years of collaboration and to present the group with a commemorative build plate that will be displayed in their laboratory.
The collaboration started with UPM requesting a novel additively manufactured plate bottle opener. This project utilized the creativity of the CDME undergraduate students to create a unique lattice structure to compliment the rather simplistic design of metal additive build plates. Since then, the collaboration has grown to where UPM has hired CDME students. CDME is working with UPM on a regular basis for its EDM and grinding services and collaborating on a variety of projects within the CDME additive lab.
Build plates are integral to additive processes like Powder Bed Fusion and Directed Energy Deposition. They represent the foundation upon which ideas are brought to life, where creativity meets technology and where innovation takes shape. By presenting the commemorative plate, UPM acknowledges Ohio State's pivotal role as a catalyst for progress and celebrates the collaborative spirit thriving within its academic community.
Chris Prue, Application Development Manager for UPM Additive Solutions, emphasized the transformative insights gained from working with the CDME team. He stated, "Collaborating with CDME provides a glimpse into the next generation of additive designs and technology. UPM Additive Solutions is proud to support the continued efforts to accelerate development for projects by collaborating our services along with allowing students to understand the value chain."
"We work with many small and large businesses similar to UPM" stated Ben DiMarco Additive Manufacturing Technology Leader at CDME. "A diverse ecosystem of collaborators allows our students a unique opportunity to learn and ultimately find a landing spot after they graduate." This is paramount to CDME's mission as they employ undergraduates in their research center to supplement the undergraduate learning environment. "In recent projects we have worked with UPM to finish machine our plates, provide part services, and allow for improved logistics in complex manufacturing projects," DiMarco added.
Ohio State University's CDME plays a vital role in advancing the state of manufacturing through interdisciplinary research, industry collaboration, technology commercialization and workforce development. By leveraging its expertise, resources and partnerships, CDME continues to drive innovation and fuel economic development in Ohio and beyond.
UPM Additive Solutions continues to provide supply chain solutions for metal-based additive for companies and institutions of all sizes. Its build plate and consumables business coupled with innovate programs to scale additive by providing services based around the value chain outside of directly printing parts.
