Improved Automation Capabilities for MicroBlasting
August 1, 2020
Comco Inc., manufacturer of MicroBlasting equipment, has developed new options for its automated microblasting systems. Parts handling options now include a Grip Wrist and Flipper Gripper.
The Grip Wrist, which brings the part to the nozzle, allows for batch processing. It is suitable for processing spinal implants, dental implants and bone screws. The Flipper Gripper is used when two sides of a part need to be blasted. Rather than have an operator manually flip parts in a tray, the part can be flipped for blasting the second side within the blast cycle. This reduces operator interaction and the chance for human error.
Bar code reader technology improves workflow accuracy and tracking. Parts to be processed can be scanned to pull up the proper blast program, reducing operator error.
The in-unit scale is used to calculate blast duration, increasing the accuracy of material removal. It can be done by either weighing the part or weighing the blaster. The system can then calculate the blast cycles based on the parts mass or the amount of abrasive left in the blaster. Hydrodynamic seals are etched using this method.
MicroBlasting can be used to deburr, texture, cut or clean. Sample parts may be submitted for testing at Comco's Applications Lab in Burbank, CA, where engineers evaluate parts tested with different abrasive media and conditions to determine the most efficient approach for each application.
