United Tool & Machine Acquires Morton & Company

United Tool & Machine Corporation (UTM), a contract manufacturer and job shop specializing in CNC machining, manual machining, wire and small hole EDM and metal stamping, has announced the acquisition of Morton & Company located in Wilmington, MA. Acquiring Morton aligns with United's long-term growth strategy to better meet OEMs' needs for high quality, responsive, domestic machining operations.

Morton & Company was founded by David Morton in 1966 with a single lathe in his basement. He proceeded to build the business into a 70-person, three-shift operation. The company has evolved to specialize in three areas: high quality precision machining, electromechanical assemblies and mechanical assemblies released under a tight Kanban system. "The business serves regional customers in a variety of industries with its advanced CNC machining equipment. Morton also excels with ship-to-stock capabilities as well as engineering support on prototype production and tooling," said a company spokesperson. The company is both ISO9001 certified and ITAR registered.

The immediate goal is to fold the Morton & Company workforce and equipment into the UTM facility to combine all operations under one roof.

"This most recent acquisition follows numerous strategic moves by UTM President Scott Fallavollita," said the spokesperson. "Within the last six years, United Tool & Machine has seen steady growth from several strategic acquisitions-as well as a corresponding increase in customer demand."

In 2014, UTM acquired Smith Brothers Machine, a precision CNC milling and turning company located in Rockport, MA. That opportunity allowed the company to expand its customer base, broaden its capabilities and gain skilled personnel all in one transaction. It also provided entry into defense and aerospace markets.

In 2016 the company acquired HRI Precision Tool Company (HRI) of Haverhill, MA. HRI's technical capabilities in CNC machining, tooling manufacturing and mechanical assembly were an ideal addition to UTM's existing line of services.

In 2019 the company acquired B.G. Peck, a producer of precision fabricated metallic and non-metallic custom parts. Peck had multiple overlapping competencies with UTM and represented a significant expansion of capability and floor space.

"These acquisitions are due to the singular mindset of achieving continuous improvement," said Fallavollita. "We reinvest every dollar back into the business with the intent to grow; not mindless growth for growth's sake, but intelligent growth that augments the company in some important, strategic way. Not only does this save jobs, but it also creates them too. Bolstering workforce capabilities translates into opportunities to better serve a loyal customer base. As a byproduct it also helps attract more qualified people to a company actively engaging growth opportunities and building the foundation to become more competitive."
