Space-Saving Portal Milling Machine for High-Speed Machining

F. Zimmermann's FZ40 compact is a compact new solution for efficient machining of steel and other materials. It is especially suitable for model makers and mold makers who want to focus more on toolmaking.

Zimmermann has introduced the FZ40 compact, a new machine based on the FZ33 compact and offering the same space-saving dimensions. Its primary applications are efficient machining of steel, cast iron and titanium. Like the FZ33 compact, it has an inherently rigid monoblock structure that allows it to be set up easily and rapidly. With its new machine Zimmermann is targeting customers who do heavy-duty cutting and want to focus more on toolmaking.

Whereas the FZ33 compact was designed for fast and efficient machining of aluminum and composites, the FZ40 compact goes a step further. With the same external dimensions and a working area of X=2,400, Y=2,900 and Z=1,250 millimeters, it is especially suitable for machining workpieces made of steel, cast iron and titanium.

The machine features the new VH60 2-axis milling head with a spindle power of 63 kW, a spindle speed of 15,000 RPM and a torque of 300 Nm. It is available with the HSK-A100 toolholder. Zimmermann has given the new system all the advantages of the FZ33 compact but enhanced it for heavy-duty cutting. For this purpose it made the portal more massive and more rigid. It also provided a larger cross slide and designed the vertical slide specifically for machining tool steel. "These features make the machine even sturdier," said a company spokesperson.

"Moreover, Zimmermann strengthened the base plate," continued the spokesperson. "It can now hold workpieces weighing as much as 16 metric tons. Eight additional mounting elements are provided for greater stability. The sidewalls are filled with special concrete and rest on the machine bed. This makes it possible to erect the machine on a solid industrial floor - usually without special machine foundations. Users thus have greater flexibility when setting it up.

"Owing to its particularly high performance and stability, the FZ40 compact can machine steel components quickly and economically on 5 axes. It achieves short throughput times, high availability and high precision. Due to the standardization of assemblies, the modular construction of the machine and the stocking of assembly parts, Zimmermann can offer the FZ40 compact at an attractive price and ensure fast delivery."
