Advanced Manufacturing with Gear Hobbing and Grinding

Bumotec SA will showcase its model s191FTLR 7-axis turn mill at IMTS 2016. "The application on display will feature Bumotec's expertise in manufacturing complex shapes from hard materials in a single set-up" said a company spokesperson. The one shot approach combines grinding, milling, turning, gear profile generation and deburring on one machine without interruption.

"The ability to manufacture complex micro size workpieces is in high demand - particularly with hard materials used in aerospace engines," said the spokesperson. One example is the pinion regulator designed to meter fuel efficiently within an aircraft's engine. Bumotec's approach to this manufacturing challenge is to start with a plain bar and finish the regulator complete in one set-up. Bumotec's s191FTLR (turning, milling, linear motor, retaking) is able to perform six-sided machining - including the generation of an outer ring gear and pin for the inner ring gear - without interruption to the cycle.

The ability to produce a precise tooth is accomplished by using the machine's correction capabilities and Renishaw's contactless part probing techniques. With its full size sub-spindle, the FANUC linear motor driven s-191FTLR is able to turn, gear hobb, grind, surface finish and 5-axis machine aero fuel injectors, from high mix small batches to large volume serial production.

The advantage of machining complex shapes in a single cycle is realized through quick changeovers, high productivity, low cycle times, less floor space needed and a reduction in part handling. "These benefits can yield an accurate and reproducible part at a lower manufacturing cost than traditional machining methods requiring numerous set-ups over various machines," said the spokesperson.
