New Grinders and Automation on Display



United Grinding will showcase one of its most advanced surface and profile grinding systems paired with an advanced robot that can work side-by-side with humans. "The company will also debut several other new grinding systems, including an innovative I.D. machine with radius grinding capabilities to generate precise radii, spheres, balls, cones and diameters as well as the most compact laser production center in diamond tool manufacturing," said a company spokesperson.

With a FANUC CR-7 Collaborative Robot, the BLOHM PLANOMAT HP 412 surface and profile grinding machine not only provides automated part loading and unloading but also the ability for operators to work alongside the robot. The Collaborative Robot, which does not require any type of safety fencing or light curtains, will aid in handling big heavy parts and allow operators to simply step up and interrupt those operations when needed. The robot will then automatically return to its task.

Automation further increases the productivity output of the PLANOMAT HP 412, which delivers both high feed and high acceleration rates due to a 15 kW (24.5 kW optional) grinding spindle drive, precision re-circulating ball screws and digital servo drives. The machine's linear guideways are virtually maintenance-free, and its Y and Z axes sport linear glass scales for precise machine motion.

Available with the new EasyProfile control or a Siemens 840D CNC, the six machines within the PLANOMAT HP series provide part grinding size ranges of 400 x 800 mm, 400 x 1,200 mm, 600 x 800 mm, 600 x 1,200 mm, 600 x 1,600 mm and 600 x 2,000 mm. The cast iron machine beds, columns, tables and wheel heads of the PLANOMAT HP machines provide rigidity and vibration dampening.

The STUDER S131R at IMTS will feature the StuderGuide guideway system with linear drive, a fully automatic B-axis with direct drive, a swiveling range of -60° to +91° and a spindle turret with up to four grinding spindles.

The machine is especially suited for grinding complex workpieces from extremely hard materials such as tungsten carbide, ceramic and sapphire as well as for general grinding applications. Optimum machine stability and rigidity allows users to generate diameters, cones and transitional radii with polished surface quality via the pendulum method through interpolation of the STUDER S131R's B and X/Z axes.

The S131 has a swing diameter of 300 mm, which makes it suitable for mold and die grinding. The machine can O.D. grind up to 160 mm and I.D. grinds to its full swing diameter as well as to lengths of 177.8 mm.

"Conventional grinding and eroding methods are unable to handle the level of precision required for processing complex cutting contours and narrow tool tolerances in CBN, PCD and CVD-D materials, but the new EWAG LASER LINE PRECISION technology provides a powerful alternative to those standard methods," said the spokesperson.

With five mechanical axes, two optical axes and short-pulse fiber laser technology, the LASER LINE PRECISION is designed to handle all aspects of diamond tool production in a single clamping. Automatic calibration of the axes and a 3-D measuring probe with soldering error detection are engineered to ensure the accurate production of rotationally symmetrical tools up to 7.87" in diameter and 9.84" in length as well as indexable cutting insert diameters from 0.12" inscribed to 1.97" circumscribed.

An industrial 20 W short-pulse fiber laser with a 532 nm green wavelength and 1.5 ns pulse duration make the LASER LINE PRECISION capable of processing super hard materials. Due to the short application time of the laser pulse, the machine's laser energy feeds into the tool before plasma effects are produced in the machining area.
