5th Axis Self-Centering Vises

Samchully Workholding has introduced the CMV-125R self-centering vise to help satisfy increasing demand for 5th axis machining requirements. "Machining applications that require positioning accuracy with respect to a rotating axis or axes benefit most from our self-centering design that actively slides the workpiece to center," said a company spokesperson. "Self-centering vises are especially well suited for machines with a 5-axis rotary table mounted wherein dynamic offsetting is not available to accommodate for positioning deviations."

The spokesperson continued, "The latest innovations in 5-axis workholding technology address the need for rigidity, strong clamping force and compactness for 5-sided workpiece accessibility. The CMV-125R accurately positions and stabilizes the workpiece without obstructing access to specific sides of the part. Compared to traditional 3-axis vises, with one chucking set-up the CMV-125R allows for parts to be oriented for subsequent machining operations without unclamping the workpiece for repositioning. The height of the vise provides optimal tool clearance without compromising rigidity nor vibration dampening characteristics, resulting in high productivity and repeatability."

Constructed with precision ground heat-treated chrome molybdenum steel, the vise is engineered to be both accurate and durable. The ground lead screw and guideways position the workpiece toward the center of the vise with 0.0008" or better repeatability. The internal clamping mechanism and precision guideways of the CMV-125R are protected from coolant, chips and debris by an accordion sheet metal guard below the jaws. This encapsulated design reduces maintenance.

A simple bolt-on design eliminates the need to disassemble the vise to swap out jaws between operations. Moreover, the jaw mounting surface has 1.5 mm pitch x 60° serrations allowing for repeatable repositioning of jaws, thereby reducing set-up time. The CMV-125R vise is flexible with jaws that can be reversed for I.D. and O.D. clamping. "Our comprehensive range of dovetail, step, hard and serrated jaws are well suited for most machining requirements," said the spokesperson.

The CMV-125R mounts directly on most 8" rotary table faceplates with the two positioning keys, and they are easy to dial in on center. At only 4.13" tall and 37 lbs., the compact and lightweight design makes the CMV-125R suitable for direct mounting on 5-axis rotary tables or mounting several in tandem on a trunnion without adding much additional load for the rotary table's motor or brake. The vise can accommodate parts 4.9" long, and it features gripping force up to 11,240 lbf. "With such a strong grip, the CMV-125R requires a minimal gripping surface, so secondary operations to remove the primary gripping area is quickly achieved without wasting excess material," said the spokesperson.
