New Line of Bridge Mills

Soraluce has introduced a new series of CNC Bridge Mills to complement its broad range of milling, boring and turning solutions for large, complex components.

The Soraluce CNC Bridge Mills complete product range includes two configurations: fixed bridge portal machines with traveling table or traveling gantry portal machines with fixed table(s). Both configurations are available with a fixed or elevating cross rail, multitasking options and the wide range of Soraluce designed and manufactured heads, including universal, vertical, 90°, 5-axis and more.

The new family of bridge mills offers a range of large capacity, high-precision machines, with high stock removal rates, incorporating advanced dampening systems with Soraluce patented DAS and DWS systems. The series also provides versatility due to multitasking options with a capacity for milling, turning and grinding. All of these machines can be customized to each individual customer's requirements, both in terms of milling and turning heads, tool magazines and work areas, i.e. floor plates, milling rotary tables or turning tables.

The traveling gantry series of portal machines makes it possible to have multiple workstations. Users can maximize productivity by minimizing downtime during workpiece set-up using pendulum machining or by combining workstations to increase the versatility and flexibility of the machine.

The X-axis (longitudinal) traverse can be customized according to the needs of each user. The Y-axis (cross) traverse of the ram is 157" up to 413"; the Z-axis (vertical) traverse of the ram is from 59" up to 118", and can be complemented with a fully programmable live W-axis cross rail with traverse from 39" up to 157" and allows interpolation with all machine axes.

Soraluce Bridge Mills can be equipped with a variety of heads, such as a stepless universal head with indexing increments of 0.001º x 0.001º, fixed vertical boring heads, automatic angular boring heads, 5-axis heads, multitasking heads, turning tool holders and special application heads. Spindle power ranges from 57 HP to 135 HP with spindle speed range up to 7,000 RPM. The alternatives for driving the head include various in-line motor options integrated into the ram (direct spindle drive) and always water-cooled, with powerful variants that incorporate the option of mechanical gear reduction. Direct-drive spindle options are also available that can provide spindle speeds up to 24,000 RPM.

Every Soraluce Bridge Mill incorporates a tool magazine with capacities available from 40 up to 180 tools. The standard design provides full visibility of the magazine, protection against chips and coolant, as well as a sliding window for easily loading and unloading tools. Larger capacity and special tool magazines with no limitation are also available.

Additionally, all machines can be equipped with the Soraluce automatic head changing system. This fully modular system utilizes adapter flanges that can be applied to any head for rapid and accurate head changes.

Soraluce has applied its knowledge of linear guidance systems in developing these new portal machines. It combines guidance technology with passive dampening systems by means of hydrostatic dampening pads, as well as active systems exclusive to Soraluce, such as the DAS (Patent no. EP 3 017 911) and DWS (Patent no. EP 3 226 089 B1) systems. "The result is a high-precision machine tool, stable during machining and reliable in terms of availability," said a company spokesperson. "Together with a full cast iron structure, common on every Soraluce machine, it becomes the most rigid and dynamic solution on the market."

The driving systems chosen for each axis are designed to provide durability and reliability. The cross and longitudinal axes are driven by double rack and pinion systems by means of two motors configured in drive-driven mode on each of the racks. This system provides high dynamics at maximum speeds of 1,378 IPM. A backlash-free transmission is designed to provide long term accuracy.

The operator cabin is fully enclosed and houses the CNC panel, giving the operator visibility of the machining area. The operator cabin is fixed to the column, which means for gantry type machines the operator is always in line with the cutting tool. For taller machines, the operator cabin can be equipped to traverse up the column and out over the work area.
