CMM Offers Multi-Sensor High-Speed Scanning

(l-r) AIMS Vice President Mark Gearding and President Dave Delph work with the new AIMS Summit CMM

AIMS Metrology, a Dayton, OH-based OEM for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), has introduced the new Summit 10.10.10. Engineered with a 5-axis REVO-2 dynamic scanning probe and 1 meter cubed capacity, the Summit gives a diverse range of industries-including automotive, aerospace, medical and metal cutting and forming companies-the capacity to handle high volume, large parts inspection. The new CMM can be automated with a robot load/unload system or pass through process with a conveyor. The Summit has already been adopted by Honda Transmission Manufacturing of America Inc.

"In 2015 AIMS entered the job shop space with the Revolution Series HB, the industry's only 5-axis mobile CMM with a PH20 touch trigger indexing head. The Summit, a stationary model, provides the industry's largest workpiece weight of 2,200 kg while preserving valuable floor space. The Summit is a game changer for manufacturers," said AIMS Vice President Mark Gearding. "Its development was prompted by customer requests for large inspection capacity enhanced with REVO-2's latest sensors such as RVP vision and SFP2 surface measurement."

The REVO-2 provides measuring speeds up to 500 mm/second and data collection rates of up to 4,000 points per second for increased part throughput. Rapid calibration for all positions expands uptime. Infinite positioning and 5-axis motion offer easy access to difficult features while flexible tip sensing aids accuracy and flexibility.

Dual linear motors work off permanent magnets that do not wear out. "Conventional belt and pulley mechanisms have a tendency to break, resulting in costly service calls and extensive downtime. AIMS' design minimizes wear and tear for zero maintenance and enhanced uptime. The result is precision positioning and reliability," said a company spokesperson.

"We first integrated dual linear motors into the design/build of our lab-grade 5-axis LM," Gearding said. "Our field experience with this type of motor configuration helped us to modify it for the Summit design. These motors provide superior positioning accuracies for REVO technology."

"Summit's polymer-cast base has built-in vibration resistance and thermal stability for longer life and greater accuracy, unlike granite shop floor machines," said the spokesperson. The CMM uses standard 110/220 volt outlets, eliminating the need for shop air. In addition to robotic or pass through conveyor automation, the Summit can be equipped with automatic tool adjustment for tool wear. The Summit is also suited to composite manufacturing applications.

AIMS' CMMs are built in the United States and engineered for the shop floor, the lab and automated applications in smart factory settings. The CMMs are exclusively supported by Renishaw technology through probe heads, touch probes, scanning probes, incremental encoder scale systems, change racks, styli, controls and Modus software. AIMS also provides installation, calibration, service/support and training. Machine retrofits and refurbished equipment are also available.
