Increase Milling Production by 263%

A customer looking to improve throughput and reduce scrap on a 5-axis, thin-walled part project asked Royal Products to develop a multi-part workholding solution. "Armed with solid models of the rotary table, workpieces and machine envelope, our engineers presented four options," said a company spokesperson. "All four options were able to utilize Royal's standard off-the-shelf Quick-Grip fixtures coupled with custom-profile collets machined to match the unique workpiece shapes."
The customer chose the 2x2 arrangement with Royal Quick-Grip Manual Collet Fixtures (option 2) because he determined that for his application this offered the best combination of part volume, programming ease and cutting tool clearance.
"The customer has since reported an increase in daily throughput of 263% over his previous vise set-up, as well as a significant reduction in crushed parts due to the evenly distributed grip force achieved by the full contact between the custom-profile collets and parts," said the spokesperson. "Set-up times between part families have also been greatly reduced due to Royal Quick-Grip collet changes taking just seconds to complete."
