Multitalented HMC Offers Innovative Simplicity

Designed and built in the Mazak iSMART Factory in Florence, KY, the HC-5000 horizontal machining center (HMC) features innovative technologies that are designed to boost speed, output, reliability and precision for many metalworking applications. "Featuring enhanced capabilities and performance, the HC-5000 is designed to suit nearly any production environment. The machine's simplicity and ease of use make it a great addition to job shops and larger manufacturing facilities across all industries," said a company spokesperson.

This 4-axis HMC's standard equipment includes traveling columns and full 4-axis NC rotary tables to accommodate large, heavy workpieces, delivering speed and precision that shorten part cycle times. High-accuracy encoders offer enhanced repeatability. Within the machine footprint, the chip conveyor system provides efficient, low-maintenance chip management that reduces downtime.

Diverse spindle options enable the HC-5000 to machine aluminum, cast iron and more. Along with a standard 12,000 RPM spindle, options include 15,000 and 20,000 RPM maximum speeds, all in 40 taper and BIG-PLUS 40 configurations, with hybrid ceramic ball bearings and cooling jackets for precision performance and long life.

A reinforced cast-iron base and column provide high rigidity and thermal control as well as ample part capacity. The combination of rigid machine base, advanced spindle/motor design and MAZATROL CNC submicron machine movement give the HC-5000 high part accuracy and surface finish capabilities. Because shops often relocate smaller-sized machines within their facilities, the HC-5000 includes a 3-point support system to simplify foundation preparation, speed up installation and ease leveling adjustment. To reduce maintenance time, the machine incorporates color-coded cables and a single easy-access maintenance panel for oil and air units.

The HC-5000 uses Mazak's latest servo drive system, with 1G axis acceleration for high machining speeds and increased accuracy. Core cooled ball screws are used to reduce thermal growth and achieve consistent positioning accuracy of linear axis movements. Advanced sensor technology promotes optimum stability and condition control, with sensors to monitor heat and vibration, along with other machine functions, for consistent high precision.

During extended hours of operation, Mazak Intelligent Machine Functions promote stable and secure machining processes. For example, when ambient shop temperatures fluctuate, Thermal Shield automatically compensates via exhaust ducts that channel generated heat out and away from the machine and any adjacent equipment.

The HC-5000's standard machine tool magazine accommodates 84 tools in a rotary drum-type storage system that features Mazak's innovative space-saving double-pocket design, with two tool pockets at 60° angles from one another at each tool position. For extended periods of unmanned operation, the machine can store twice the tooling in the same amount of space as a 42-tool magazine.

"The Mazak MX Hybrid Roller Guide System allows for faster speeds and boosts accuracy over traditional ball guides and boxways, leading to a comprehensive improvement in overall machine productivity and profitability," said the spokesperson. "The system eliminates stick and slip for higher positioning accuracy and offers nearly twice the rapid traverse rate of boxways while reducing machine coolant contamination. Meanwhile, greater surface contact accommodates large loads and provides better vibration damping, while the X-design improves distribution of load points by applying the load in four directions. "

Mazak's MAZATROL SmoothG CNC offers both EIA/ISO and MAZATROL conversational programming to ease complex part-production operations such as off-centerline machining, angled drilling, milling and tapping. The industry-standard MAZATROL conversational programming enables inexperienced personnel to develop machining programs for the HC-5000. Operators answer simple questions about criteria including material type, O.D./I.D. dimensions and part length.

The MAZATROL control automatically calculates intersection coordinates and tool index positioning while it optimizes cutting conditions and machining processes. For compatibility with programs created for other machine brands, MAZATROL uses the same G-codes as conventional EIA CNC machines. To run programs from other machines on the HC-5000, operators simply edit M-codes and confirm axis strokes, along with cutting conditions.

For streamlined data entry and reduced programming times, the MAZATROL SmoothG touchscreen control minimizes the number of displays. Five home process screens - programming, tool data, set-up, machining and maintenance - display easy-to-understand data, with touch icons for quick navigation to additional screen displays.

MAZATROL SmoothG CNC features and functions include Virtual Machining, which allows operators to evaluate part programs before they begin to cut. High Gain Feed Forward Control boosts machining speed and accuracy while Fast Rotary Axis Speeds optimizes gear skiving and rotary axis threading. Variable Acceleration Control calculates optimal acceleration for multiple axes. Position-Controlled Hobbing manages fast, convenient hobbing and skiving operations. Real-Time Tuning maintains optimal machining balance as workpiece weight changes. Quick MAZATROL imports 3D CAD models and automatically extracts coordinates to simplify machine programming. Quick EIA plots toolpaths to check for interferences.

Mazak offers a variety of performance-enhancing options for the HC-5000 to increase uptime and boost overall operational efficiency. High-pressure and SUPERFLOW coolant systems allow for increased cutting speeds, extended tool life and efficient chip evacuation various chip conveyor designs handle a wide variety of chip shapes and material types, including aluminum, steel and cast iron. Work air blasting removes stuck chips from the fixture and workpiece. A mist collector helps reduce maintenance costs and allow a clean, safe work environment. Automatic non-contact tool length measurement and tool breakage detection reduce overall part set-up time. And with a Renishaw OMP60M touch sensor tool mounted in the machine spindle, operators can shift coordinate values to align workpieces automatically.
