Air Collet Chucking

Dunham Tool's systems (ACC) are designed to provide accuracy and efficiency in all forms of secondary chucking applications. Traditional Dunham ACCs are designed for rotational machining, and not intended for through-capacity work. However, Dunham does offer through capacity units for use in stationary mounting on machining centers and bench tops.

"With today's rapidly evolving machining industry, applications for the Dunham ACC continue to grow. They are widely used for rotary or stationary applications on lathes as well as grinders (surface and cylindrical), and their use continues to expand in applications involving machining centers, CNC rotary tables and even 5-axis machining," commented a company spokesperson.

Dunham's unique built in Concentricity Flange permits adjusting concentricity to new standards of accuracy - providing improved TIR on all collets. The unit's four adjustable concentricity screws allow for adjustment to within .0005" TIR. In addition, Internal Stops can be utilized to eliminate potential part length variation due to collet drawback.

Standard shop air activates the ACCs large piston, in turn providing closing action upon the collet. The unit's spring loaded piston is then released when the air pressure is exhausted, either by means of a foot or hand valve. Added the spokesperson, "Any concern of collet sticking is virtually eliminated by Dunham's positive spring boosted return design."

Complete 3-way foot and hand valve kits can be included with any Dunham ACC Unit, providing for more efficient part handling by freeing the operator's hands. Both controller options also permit air pressure adjustability for fragile or delicate workpieces such as brass, plastics or tubing.

When it comes to the gripping power of a Dunham ACC, users can expect a minimum "Power Factor" of 11x the line pressure (i.e., at 100 PSI line pressure will exert a pull force on the collet of more than 1,100 lbs.). The collet gripping power can then be uniformly controlled by simply regulating the air pressure.

Dunham ACCs hold and activate all standard 5C collets (1/16" to 1-1/16" diameters), Dunham Expanding 5C collets and step chucks (1/4" to 6" diameters). 5C systems come in either a threaded nose model or a 4° taper nose. Standard models are also available for 2J, 3C, 3J, 16C and 22J workholding applications.
