CNC Machines for Educational, Consumer and Industrial Markets

Leading Edge Industrial Technologies, LLC is a company focused on education in manufacturing. To address this path, it has created the HX Series II product line - featuring the HX8610 vertical machining center (VMC)and the HX710 turning center.

"These compact CNC machines are fully capable, portable and affordable," said a company spokesperson. The low cost of the HX Series II CNC machines tailor to educational and training settings by allowing a high-throughput of students. The small footprint of the HX Series II machines (less than 4 sq. ft. each) allows for many machines to occupy the same footprint as one industrial-sized machine. This set-up allows multiple students to work simultaneously on a project, instead of having to huddle around one operator at the machine controller.

Both the HX8610 VMC and HX710 TC are capable of teaching and giving students real-world experience similar to industry. The machines can cut metals, composites, plastics and wood, with feedrates and rapids exceeding 100 IPM and a measured repeatability of 0.0005 over 6" (8 microns per inch).

Due to the lack of shared funding across education, Leading Edge Industrial has specifically designed their machines to be portable and to operate on standard US120V power, meaning no phase converters or line modifications are needed. Both the HX8610 VMC and HX710 TC weigh less than 200 lbs. and are able to fit on top of a standard-size, mobile tool cart. This enables school districts, training centers and more to share machines between their facilities. It also allows for the use of a mobile training center, which can allow entire districts, recruiting agencies and technical colleges to meet the needs of their many students with fewer assets.

The machines come with basic cutting tools and a software controller. Technical support for the machines is also included.

Leading Edge Industrial has developed multi-level training courses for anyone interested in CAD/CAM/CNC machining. "Often educators do not have the time necessary to learn how to operate new equipment on their own. Leading Edge Industrial's 'Teaching Teachers to Teach' program is a suitable solution for teachers and instructors who have minimal knowledge of CNC machining," said the spokesperson.

The courses are structured for hands-on learning, which enables questions and concerns to be answered immediately. Leading Edge Industrial also publishes online videos and articles that are designed to provide continued support to educational and consumer markets with curriculum, projects and machining tips and tricks.
