New Cost Models for Fabrication Shops

MTI Systems Inc., developer of Costimator cost estimating software, has added Tube Laser and Fiber Laser cost models to its cost model library.

The tube laser cost model represents the manufacturing times and costs for tube laser machines such as Trumpf, Adige-BLM and Mazak which are used to cut metal tubing. This technology blends more than six various operations within a single working cycle on one tube laser machine. Through their fully programmed automatic cycle, they pierce, cut and notch metal tubing configurations. "This process eliminates all of the traditional sawing, machining, deburring and drilling operations performed by conventional machines and adds operable process and time savings to the fabrication and cutting process," said a company spokesperson.

The fiber laser cost model represents the manufacturing times and costs for fiber laser machines such as Bystronic, Hypertherm and Trumpf that are used to cut, notch and pierce sheet metal. "A primary advantage of cutting flat sheet metal with fiber laser technology is that its compact solid state design configuration is practically maintenance free," said the spokesperson. "It provides a lower cost of operation than what can be achieved with comparable CO2 lasers and offers faster cut rates as well."

According to the company, Landoll Corporation - the first North American manufacturer to acquire the LT JUMBO tube laser, made by BLM Group - needed the cost models added to Costimator so that its cost estimating team could estimate parts based on using this new machine. "Integrating new manufacturing technologies, such as work centers, into Costimator is easy, enabling users to develop new cost models as their company acquires new equipment," said Scott Padgett, Process Engineer at Landoll Corporation. "Once you learn the basics to building cost models, they can be developed very quickly."
