Several Options for Modular Machine Vises

EXSYS Tool, Inc., an importer for GRESSEL clamping systems, offers the Swiss company's gripos solutions. "These modular machine vises clamp by tension rather than compression to eliminate baseplate deflection and ensure high machining accuracy of raw parts and finished workpieces," said a company spokesperson.

"GRESSEL designed its gripos vises using a modular platform to ensure equipment versatility for all types of applications. These vises include mechanical and hydraulic versions as well as feature a wide range of options," continued the spokesperson.

Mechanical solutions include the gripos 100, 125 and 160 models with 100 mm, 125 mm and 160 mm jaw widths, respectively. A manual force cassette and spindle assembly generate the clamping force for these vises, which ranges from 4 to 30 kN on the 100 model and 4 to 40 kN on the 125 and 160 models.

Users can choose from several options, including an extended clamping range (100-VS, 125-VS and 160-VS models), clamping for molded workpieces (100-AL and 125-AL models), an adapter and swivel plate (100-R, 125-R and 160-R models), high support jaws (100-5A and 125-5A models), high support jaws with extended clamping ranges (100-5A-VS, 125-5A-VS and 160-5A-VS models), vertical units with dual gripos (100-2V and 125-2V) and a tombstone with four gripos (100-4V, 125-4V with a 400 x 400 mm plate and 125-4V with a 500 x 500 mm plate).

Hydraulic solutions include the gripos 125-H and 160-H with 125 mm and 160 mm jaw widths, respectively. A hydraulic cassette and modified spindle assembly generate the clamping force for these vises via hydraulic pressure as opposed to a clamping lever. The 125-H has a clamping force of 40 kN with a maximum clamping stroke of 5 mm, while the 160-H's clamping force is 70 kN with a maximum clamping stroke of 6 mm. These vises are also available in extended clamping ranges (125-H-VS and 160-H-VS models).

Overall, gripos vises feature 160-degree rapid clamping where there is no need for an additional angle drive or cranking operations, which results in complete clamping in less than a second and reduced set-up times. Each vise's encased force transmission is designed to prevent chip and coolant contamination, while a coolant drain is built to further increase trouble-free operations. "Also easy to handle, these vises quickly and directly attach to a machine table via their baseplates as opposed to clamping claws," said the spokesperson. "Furthermore, because they have clamping pins in their base plates, these vises are ideal for quick-change palleting systems."
