Warehouse Management Software for Horizontal Carousel Applications
February 1, 2015
Power Pick Global warehouse management software offers different picking methods in horizontal carousel applications to improve efficiencies. "Horizontal carousel systems integrated with Power Pick Global warehouse management software can increase productivity by two-thirds, throughput by 500% and accuracy up to 99.9%, all within a smaller footprint," said a company spokesperson.
According to the company, incorporating software within a standalone horizontal carousel system allows for light directed picking, which makes the work flow at a faster pace, according to the company. "Power Pick Global warehouse management software can control one horizontal carousel or a pod of carousels, which consists of two or more carousels next to each other or stacked on top of the other," said the spokesperson. "The software manages the bin locations for each part stored within the carousel. With the touch of a button, the carousel spins into place to present the part to the operator for picking. Light towers mounted in between carousels direct the operator to the exact pick location within the carousel and displays the quantity to pick - increasing picking productivity and improving pick accuracy."
Operations picking one order at a time can increase throughput with batch picking. A batch picking station can be integrated into the horizontal carousel workstation. Orders are loaded into the Power Pick Global software and are sorted for the worker. Each order is segregated into a tote on the batch station. The carousels spin to fulfill multiple orders at once. For example, if two orders require the same part, the carousels will spin to that location, and the light towers will direct the worker to pick the appropriate quantity for both orders. After picking the required parts from the carousel, the worker simply turns to the batch station, and batch lights indicate the correct quantity for each order. "Fulfilling multiple orders with one pick increases throughput," said the spokesperson. "With higher throughput, operations can often extend order cutoff times.
"Power Pick Global can also increase productivity using pick banding, which applies when the carousels are too tall for a worker to pick from the top bin location. For example, if the horizontal carousels are 14 feet tall, the worker would require a lift table (lift platform) to pick from the upper portion of the carousel. Using a pick banding strategy, the carousel would present parts for picking from the top band of the carousel which require use of the lift table, then move down to the bottom band to complete the picking. Pick banding eliminates moving the lift table up and down in between picks, increasing picking speeds and efficiencies."
