Hydraulic Tombstone Workholding for HMCs
September 1, 2013
"The flexibility of EB Manufacturing Company's hydraulic tombstone system provides a cost-effective workholding solution for horizontal machining centers. Designed for power clamping, the tombstone's standard core column allows easy changeover of the fixture plate from one type of part to another. Various types of parts can be clamped by simply changing the top jaws on each stationary chuck, thus minimizing the cost of dedicated tooling," said a company spokesperson.
For further flexibility, the hydraulic tombstones can be used as a three-way or four-way system, and can be automated or manually activated. If automated, the tombstone functions as a constant pressure system. When the column is connected with a machine, clamp-on and clamp-off are controlled by the machine's control or program. If the tombstone is manually actuated, an accumulator backup system allows the operator to control a pump for clamp-on and clamp-off.
The manifold system of EB's hydraulic tombstones utilizes four sequence valves (one per face) that allow each face to be controlled individually by the control valve. The tombstone has an integrated check valve system within its manifold. The manifold-ported columns require no piping for easier programming.
"EB's hydraulic tombstone system features consistent clamping pressure, faster loading and unloading capabilities requiring less hands-on time and an ergonomic design that reduces stress on the operator," said the spokesperson.
