Grinders in Energy Industry

European universal cylindrical grinding machines BUC, BHC and BUB from Fermat Machine Tool are designed for traverse, plunge-cut grinding of cylindrical and conical external surfaces, and are available with internal grinding attachments for grinding of cylindrical and conical internal surfaces. Grinding of face surfaces can be performed by the side of the grinding wheel as well.

Grinding machines produced by Fermat are commonly used in the production of machines, heavy vehicles, rail gear and oil drilling units. For example, Trio OilTec Services in Stavanger, Norway, uses grinding machine BUC E 63/4000 CNC in the production and retrofitting of parts for extreme conditions within the mining industry. The company reported that with this equipment, they can now obtain a surface finish on both hard and soft coatings, including HVOF, arc spray, PTA and hardened or mild steel. They now also have the capability to grind most of the tools used within the oil and gas industry.

Machine capacity of the BUC E 63/4000 CNC includes:

  • Rod maximum length: 4,000 mm in between centers
  • Rod maximum diameter: 570 mm
  • Surface finish Ra: 0.2
  • Roundness of workpiece: 0.002 mm.

Fermat grinders can be used in single-part and series production for the grinding of workpieces up to 3,000 kg. Automatic work cycles and the option of setting up and equipping Fermat grinders with an axial probe make the machines suitable for economic grinding in series production.

"Although the machine has many technological features, it is still ideal for single piece and job shop production," said a company spokesperson. "It is equipped with a joystick, which simplifies operator intervention and allows simple transition from manual to CNC operation.

"The grinders fulfill rising requirements of increased output by easy manipulation of controls. Accuracy reaches up to 0.002 mm. The machines are equipped with modern constructional elements by well-known manufacturers. The control panel is conveniently placed, and this easy access enables effortless manipulation for the operator. The grinders are also suitable for adjusting grinding technology according to customer's specifications."
