Special Machines for Profile Machining

"Large-volume workpieces or long sections that are processed by machining from multiple sides often fit poorly, or not at all, inside standard machines," said a Suhner spokesperson. "For such workpiece scenarios, the usual fixtures are no longer sufficient and extraordinary solutions are necessary. If a high output is also required, the construction of a special machine makes economic sense."

Suhner's division for special machines has developed a modular system to enable the creation of special machines for various applications of profile machining. One such machine produces precision rail guides, with operations performed simultaneously from two sides.

Rapid workpiece transfer was as important as precise and rapid loading, unloading and fixturing. The fixture device geometry allows simultaneous drilling in steps, on the holes in tool steel. "The high-pressure internal cooling of the carbide tools allows excellent drilling performance," said a company spokesperson. The installation consists of two spindles that perform, in less than three minutes, 140 drilling operations, loading and unloading included. The positioning of the spindle and the actual drilling operation takes place in about two seconds.

The automatic loading and unloading allows predictable autonomy. Stacks, position checking and bulky workpiece feeding are adapted individually to the workpieces.

Assembly profiles, profiles for windows and doors, plus steel profiles of any kind are often cut for further cost optimization from bar stock. In such projects, additional considerations for the optimal utilization of raw material and the handling of the remaining piece in the machine cycle are necessary.
